Who Killed Roe and What Comes Next? – 11 am to 1 pm
Amy Littlefield, abortion access correspondent for The Nation, has spent over a decade reporting on abortion rights. Her new book Killers of Roe unpacks the motives, means, and opportunities used by the anti-abortion movement to defeat Roe, and reckons honestly with half a century of mistakes on the pro-choice side. This workshop will look at lessons for organizers that emerged from Littlefield’s reporting. How did abortion opponents successfully co-opt strategies and language from the civil rights and feminist movements? How did they build a grassroots infrastructure to out-organize defenders of abortion rights? And what can those of us who believe in reproductive justice learn from their victories?
Speaker Bio: Amy Littlefield is the abortion access correspondent for The Nation and a journalist who has focused on abortion rights for over a decade. Her new book is Killers of Roe: My Investigation into the Mysterious Death of Abortion Rights.
Liberating Abortion - 2 to 4 pm
What does it mean to liberate abortion? What would a reproductively just world look like? As we are trying to rebuild abortion access in our communities and across the nation, we must envision something beyond the basics of "restoring Roe" but also not fall into the traps of carcerality, white supremacy, and reproductive coercion. In this workshop, Liberating Abortion author, We Testify founder, and activist Renee Bracey Sherman will lead participants through activities to help them recognize abortion and reproductive stigma, clarify their values around abortion and abolition, and envision their own liberated future to build toward.
Speaker Bio: Renee Bracey Sherman is a reproductive justice activist, abortion storyteller, and co-author of LIBERATING ABORTION: Claiming Our History, Sharing Our Stories, and Building the Reproductive Future We Deserve. For a decade she led We Testify, an organization she founded dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions. With her co-author Regina Mahone, Renee co-hosted The A Files: A Secret History of Abortion, a podcast from The Meteor. She served as an executive producer of Ours to Tell, an award-winning documentary elevating the voices of people who’ve had abortions. Renee is currently a PhD student at American University’s School of Communication.
