    Seasons, shows and directors are chosen by the Executive Director by viewing the applications received, the season show surveys of the last few years filled out by patrons and actors, as well as productions currently running, already announced, and recently put on in our area. After the season is put together, the BOD (Board of Directors) vote to approve or change any part of the season, contingent on contracts. As we get applications, it will be sent to the ED to discuss and read through the scripts, as well as look at the financial obligations of said production. After the initial process, it then will depend on if we are able to receive the rights from the publishers before we can officially offer or decline any productions. This process usually takes six months or longer. We will notify you if you have been selected to continue to the next step of the process. We appreciate your time and desire to work with us!   • On Choosing Productions for the 2027-2028 Season

    At this time, Little Theater of Gastonia is looking for 3 to 4 productions to round out our 2027-2028 Season. Please read below of how to best choose the productions you wish to apply for:

  • A lot of thought, time, and effort goes in to how we choose our productions for each season. To help applicants better understand what we are looking for, please read through the information below in order to aid with your application ideas to better your chances of being able to direct a show in the future at Little Theater of Gastonia!

    PRODUCTION TYPES

    • At this time, Little Theater of Gastonia is looking to work with up to three musicals and two plays. One of those musicals or plays should be a children's and/or family-friendly production.
    • We look to create a well-rounded season for our community that includes favorite classics, new edgier material, and everything in between. Please be aware that applications in the past often trend towards edgier, smaller-cast productions which limits the possibility of you being chosen.
      • We suggest that you put in for various types of productions you would be willing (yet still enthusiastic) to produce to broaden your chances. Please also note that we have noticed a rise with the trends which leads many applicants to apply for the same show, so there is a chance that the show you put in for may be chosen but with a different director who has put in for the same production.
    • While the seasons can vary for a plethora of reasons and no specific formula is set in stone as we recognize that we are a living, breathing theater in an ever-changing, adapting realm of the arts world, we loosely fall into the following categories when choosing shows:
      • Classic Musical - a well-known and beloved show that is a staple in even the households that weren't raised within the theatre world. These shows are generally a larger cast with age ranges from children to seniors and usually skew a little more family-friendly in content. These shows will usually require a larger budget, a well-versed crew not just as a director but also with a music director, choreography, and backstage crew. While not always the case, applicants with successful experience in producing one or more large musicals should be the ones applying for this production slot. Recent past productions fitting this criteria would include shows such as Annie, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Bye Bye Birdie. These productions should usually remain between G-PG13 rated content.
      • Classic Play: a well-known and beloved play that resonates within many groups of people within the community. These plays are usually smaller casts and smaller budgets. They can be comedy, tragedy, and/or mystery. Recent past productions fitting this criteria would include shows such as Wait Until Dark, The Odd Couple, The Diary of Anne Frank, A Christmas Carol,  and Steel Magnolias. These productions should usually remain between G-PG13 rated content.
      • Modern/Edgy Musical: this musical can be a more modern production and/or an edgier production in musical form. These cast sizes vary dependant on the production and will usually require a larger budget, a well-versed crew not just as a director but also with a music director, choreography, and backstage crew. While not always the case, applicants with successful experience in producing one or more large musicals should be the ones applying for this production slot. Recent past productions fitting this criteria would include shows such as Sister Act, Heathers: the Musical, Mid-Life! The Crisis Musical, and Something Rotten!. These productions should usually remain between PG-mature(R) rated content.
      • Modern/Edgy Play: this play can be a more modern production and/or an edgier production in non-musical form. These cast sizes vary dependant on the production and will usually require a smaller budget, smaller cast, and smaller crew. Recent past productions fitting this criteria would include shows such as Puffs, Clue, and A Comedy of Tenors. These productions should usually remain between PG-mature(R) rated content.
      • Children/Family Musical: these musicals can be either classic or modern shows which showcases the talents of our younger thespians and/or are geared towards children, teens and/or families. These musicals are almost always large cast shows that require experienced directors in not just ability to produce productions but with the correct disposition to work with children and families. Recent past productions fitting this criteria (with some overlap) includes shows such as Annie, Matilda the Musical, and Bye Bye Birdie. These productions should usually remain between G-PG rated content.
      • Children/Family Play: these plays can be either classic or modern shows which showcases the talents of our younger thespians and/or are geared towards children, teens, and/or families. These plays are almost always large cast shows that require experienced directors in not just ability to produce productions but with the correct disposition to work with children and families. Recent past productions fitting this criteria (with some overlap) includes shows such as Puffs, Junie B. Jones is NOT a Crook!, and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. These productions should usually remain between G-PG rated content.

     

    BUDGETS & EXPECTATIONS/LIMITS

    • Applicants need to take in consideration the cost of the productions they are applying for, as it weighs heavily on our decision - if the show's set/costumes/rights cost are higher than average, it is imperative that applicants take note of how they will offset certain costs to make it possible to produce in a smaller, non-profit community theater.
    • Applicants should also be aware of the current limitations of Little Theater of Gastonia which include, but do not exclude:
      • Extremely limited projections capability
      • Operatable fly system with limited rails, but would need to have tech crew who are trained on the system in order to work 
        • This fly system can fly in sets and certain pieces, but not humans. We are currently not able to allow any suspension of any kind of humans, no matter their weight or training.
      • We are updating our lights, but are limited on speciality lighting - including spot - at this time
      • We are updating our curtains, so at this time we do not have functioning legs and we may still be relying on masking and/or Hollywood flats 
    • Our building is quite old and we are working diligently to both upkeep and update the facility. Our backstage and wings are small and not always handicap accessible. Outside of obvious limitations, it can also hamper a director's ability to have certain set pieces, props, or very large casts. Please keep this in mind when choosing productions.

  • On Choosing Production Crews for the 2027-2028 Season

    Please read below about crew expectations.

  • All potential members within a production will be required to pass a background check.

    • Additional requirements for potential crew members:
      • Music Director, Choreographer, Stage Manager, Backstage Manager, Costume Master/Mistress, Properties Master/Mistress, Set Builder, Set Designer, Light Designer, Sound Designer, Fly/Rail Operator: These crew members should be 18+, reliable, organized, must be able to pass a background check, and should have education, training, and/or comparble experience in the areas in which they will be over. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis by the Executive Director. 
      • Light Operators, Sound Operators, Spot Operators, Assistant Directors, Assistant Choreographer, Dance Captain, Assistant Stage Managers, Assistant Backstage Managers, Backstage Crew, Costume Team, Properties Team, Hair & Make Up, Set Build Team, Scenic Artist: These crew members can be any age and can have any amount or even no experience, as long as they have reliable means of transportation and the lead of operations over their team (ie: Costume Mistress for the Costume Team) is willing to take responsbility for the work and actions of the individual who is not yet 18+ and/or has not received proper training. 
      • Anyone who would be operating equipment that is owned by the theater must be properly trained before being allowed to use that equipment. That includes, but does not exclude, our: lights, light board, sound board, microphones, fly/rail system, and/or any power tools. Failure to do so will amount to immediate dismissal of the untrained individual from the production and could also amount to dismissal of other production team members found at fault. 
    • Please note that the BOD and Exec. Dir. reserve the right to not allow and/or dismiss crew members or potential crew members from productions for any reason, including but not excluding: inability to follow rules and expectations, conflicts within the production, and/or prior issues regarding the individual.

    Experience is not required to be a production director at Little Theater of Gastonia and we have employed numerous directors and/or managers with little to no experience. So, the more detailed your resume in all aspects, the better.
