Discover Academies (Grade 7-8)
Architecture (Discover and Aspire): This term, we will be discovering all the facets of the Faculty of Architecture. We will be doing small projects to portray the daily life of an Architecture student. From sketches to pin-ups, this series will introduce you to the Faculty of Architecture! We will explore many forms of design! If you participated in this Academy last year and are considering joining again this year, you can expect some similarities, but you are more than welcome to join us again!
Nutrition (Discover and Aspire): Do you like to get creative in the kitchen? Are you curious about cooking? Do you aspire to eat healthy delicious meals? Are you wondering about all the ways the food you eat influences your health? If yes - CanU Nutrition Academy sounds like the place for you! Join us for an academy of science behind cooking, where we discover the world of nutrition, develop healthy habits, and dive into cooking together.
WISE (Discover): WISE Kid-Netic Energy is offering Grade 7 and 8 students to step into the roles of real STEM professionals through five interactive, hands-on challenges. Participants will design a working prosthetic hand as biomedical engineers, explore encryption and codebreaking as cybersecurity cryptographers, investigate the anatomy of a heart as cardiac surgeons, develop automated tree-seeding technology as forestry technicians, and create their own digital spaces using TinkerCAD as architects and 3D designers.
No previous STEM or coding experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to try something new!
Pre-Med (Discover): This 5-week series is designed to progressively build scientific curiosity and understanding in elementary students, moving from sensory experiences to more advanced biological systems.

Wall Climbing (Discover and Aspire): Do you love adventure, challenges, and trying new things? Ready to build your confidence while reaching new heights? Join the CanU Wall Climbing Academy! In this program, you’ll learn the basics of wall climbing, develop climbing techniques, and challenge yourself to reach new heights in a fun and supportive environment. You’ll build strength, balance, problem-solving skills, and teamwork while learning how to safely navigate the climbing wall. Come challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone, and see how high you can climb!
Fine Arts (Discover and Aspire): Do you love to create and express yourself through art? Want to explore new materials and techniques while discovering your artistic voice? Join the CanU Fine Art Academy! In this program, you’ll experiment with a variety of mediums, from painting and printmaking to ceramics and more. You’ll also learn what it’s like to be an art student, develop your creative portfolio, and even get the chance showcase your work in a hallway exhibition at the school of art. Come discover the world of art and let your creativity shine!
Food Science (Discover and Aspire): The CanU Food Science Academy introduces students to the science, creativity, and innovation behind the foods they eat every day through engaging, hands-on activities in food product development. Students explore how food science principles are applied to create and improve food products, with activities such as making cheese, baking cookies with different ingredients to investigate how formulations affect texture and flavor, and exploring protein composition and functionality through extraction and foaming experiments. The academy also introduces fundamental food chemistry concepts, including gluten extraction from wheat flour and the use of pH indicators to observe chemical changes in foods. Through these interactive experiences, students develop curiosity about food science while discovering how scientific principles, creativity, and experimentation can transform ideas into real food products.
Code Ninjas (Discover and Aspire): Adventures in Game Design
Kids will combine coding and game design to build classic platformers, adventure games, and retro arcade experiences using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade! Throughout the camp, they'll learn foundational programming concepts while bringing their own game ideas to life. To cap off the week, everyone gets to transfer their code onto a NFC card and take their project with them to show off to their friends and family with the ability to edit and update their project based on what they learned.
Active Adventures (Discover and Aspire - Bannatyne Campus): Do you enjoy being physically active and challenging yourself to new physical experiences? Join the Active Adventures Academy, where you and other students will participate in a wide variety of hands-on, exciting games and activities that will challenge your agility, balance, and teamwork skills. It’s all about motion, so let’s move, learn, and have fun together!
Art and Science (Discover and Aspire - Bannatyne Campus): Art + Science Academy
What happens when art meets colour, movement, light, and a little bit of science?
In this academy, you’ll try a different creative project each week, from optical illusion art and marker tie-dye to movement painting, glow art, abstract designs, and 3D sculpture.
This is not a science class. The focus is on making cool art, experimenting with different techniques, and creating pieces that actually feel unique to you. You’ll get lots of freedom to choose your own colours, style, and ideas while trying art methods you may not have used before.
No art experience is needed, just bring your creativity and be ready to make something different.
Astronomy (Discover only): Have you ever wondered how astronomers figure out everything we know about stars, planets, and galaxies? Especially since everything is much too far away to visit. Come learn how astronomers take measurements from Earth about so many things in space.
CanU Mind & Wellness Academy (Discover and Aspire): Life can be full of ups, downs, and everything in between! In this Academy, participants will explore fun and practical ways to understand their emotions, manage stress, build confidence, and bounce back from challenges. Through interactive, hands-on activities, group conversations, and opportunities to get up and get active, we’ll learn how to build healthy relationships, practice positive coping strategies, and take care of our minds and bodies. Most importantly, we’ll create a welcoming space to connect, have fun, and support each other!
