• PETITION OPPOSING DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION FOR 132 NORTH ROAD, WYNNUM WEST, QLD 4178

As a concerned member of the local community, I ask Brisbane City Council to reject the proposed development of the site over concerns detailed below.
  • The development apllication currently lodged with Brisbane City Council seeks to convert the property at 132 North Road at Wynnum West into an industrial warehouse facility, which includes:

    • 58 commercial tenancies across five buildings, with an attached food and drink outlet on the North Rd edge of the site. It is unclear if the intention is for it to be a licensed premises.

    • Articulated vehicle (19m long - ie semi-trailer) access for 'regular and occasional use', along with Heavy Rigid (12.5m) and Medium Rigid (8.8m) classification vehicles.

    • Parking spaces have been allocated for 231 vehicles (227 + 4 motorcycle).

    • Increase in traffic has been forecast at 278 trips per day, with 90 per cent of traffic forecast to be along North Rd, past the Iona College front gate, bus turnaround and playing fields, and Darling Point Special School.

    • Noise assessment reports show that both campuses will be impacted, but particularly Darling Point Special School. However, these noise assessments have failed to take into account truck engine / exhaust noise created by vehicles entering and exiting the site via North Rd, passing both campuses.

    • According to their own projections within the DA, waste generation is expected to be more than 40,000L/week (combined refuse and recycling), with collection of refuse by a 12.5m long truck proposed to occur three times per week.

This, like the previous DA proposing a change of use to a truck depot, will significantly increase the number of vehicles - particularly semi-trailers and heavy vehicles - along North Rd drastically increasing the potential for injury or death of students and families, especially those at Darling Point Special School who load and unload wheelchairs while parked on the side of North Rd.

This will be a seven-days-per-week increase, meaning an elevated risk to the safety of children and families who park along North Rd for weekend sport at Iona's fields, as well as Monday-Friday pick-up, drop-off, student pedestrian traffic between the Iona campus and fields and student car park, and the entrance and exits of school buses via the North Rd turnaround.

The traffic engineering assessment provided by the applicant does not adequately address the unique traffic risks of operating a high-density industrial complex directly next to school campuses.

  • I formally object to the proposed redevelopment of 132 North Rd, Wynnum West, on the grounds of (choose all that are applicable):*
