Living Well, Leaving Well: Exploring Newcomer Grief Experiences

Grief can take many forms when building a life in a new place. Alongside the death of loved ones, newcomers may grieve the distance from family, community, language, traditions, and a place once called home, all while living with the hope and excitement of new beginnings.

Join the Nova Scotia Hospice and Palliative Care Association (NSHPCA) for a conversation about newcomer experiences of loss, belonging, and support. We’ll hear from María José Yax-Fraser, PhD Candidate with York University as she explores how culture and community shape grief, as well as her lived-experience navigating the journey she and her family have built here in Nova Scotia.

Jamie Taylor, a lawyer with Sampson McPhee Law, will shed light on the importance of Advance Care Planning and understanding the legalities for dying in Nova Scotia. Jamie has assisted countless people in their immigration journeys, from couples navigating the spousal sponsorship process to international students seeking permanent residency in Canada.
