  • SHINE, SLYC’s new inclusive choir, creates a welcoming choral community for the region's students in grades 6–12, with particular attention to removing barriers for neurodivergent students and students with cognitive, physical, or neurological disabilities. Unlike a traditional audition-based or ability-segregated ensemble, SHINE will be open to any student who wants to sing, while incorporating adaptive teaching strategies and individualized supports that enable singers with a wide range of abilities and needs to participate meaningfully.

Weekly one-hour rehearsals will include vocal warm-ups, foundational singing techniques, movement, and rehearsal of accessible, culturally diverse repertoire. Repertoire and rehearsal strategies will be intentionally selected and adapted to maximize participant engagement, musical growth, independence, and success. We will also invite parents and caregivers to participate weekly to support their child.

SHINE will be led by a board-certified music therapist and licensed music teacher, with additional support from SLYC volunteers and student mentors from other SLYC ensembles. These peer mentors will provide practical assistance while fostering friendships and meaningful connections across ability levels. The program is designed not simply to provide access to music, but to create a genuine community of belonging through music.

Once registered, the Primary Parent/Guardian listed below will receive an invite. Please indicate if you would like to request a second parent/guardian account. Keep in mind, the price of the platform is determined per user, so we prefer to limit family access to one adult. It is at your discretion if you would like to share your login information with additional adults. Any student that is under 13 years old will only have a parent profile. Once a student turns 13, they will be eligible for their own profile.

SHINE tuition is intentionally offered at a reduced rate as part of SLYC’s commitment to making this program as accessible and inclusive as possible. Just as SHINE is designed to remove barriers to meaningful music-making, we want to reduce financial barriers that could prevent students and families from participating. Keeping tuition affordable helps ensure that more students have the opportunity to experience the joy, connection, and community of singing together.
