FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Rider Acknowledgment & Assumption of Responsibility
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PARTICIPATING
Friday Night Lights is a community recreational riding event and is not a coached, guided, supervised, or instructional mountain biking activity. Wheels Up Mountain Biking provides temporary supplemental lighting in portions of the park for the enjoyment of participants.
Participation in Friday Night Lights does not change the normal responsibilities associated with recreational mountain biking or use of the park. Each participant remains responsible for their own actions, decisions, equipment, riding speed, line choice, and personal safety just as they would when independently using the park on any other day.
Temporary Lighting
I understand and acknowledge that:
Lighting provided by Wheels Up is temporary and supplemental only and is not intended or represented to make any trail, feature, parking area, roadway, pathway, or other portion of the park completely illuminated or safe.
Lighting levels and visibility may vary significantly throughout the park and trail system.
Temporary lights may create shadows, glare, bright areas, dark areas, visual distortion, reduced depth perception, and abrupt transitions between illuminated and unilluminated areas.
Lights may move, shift, become obstructed, malfunction, lose power, shut off unexpectedly, be damaged, or otherwise fail to provide illumination.
Not every trail, feature, intersection, parking area, roadway, or surrounding area will necessarily be illuminated.
Participants should never rely solely upon event lighting when determining whether an area, trail, obstacle, or feature is safe to ride.
Riders are encouraged to carry and use their own properly functioning bicycle or helmet-mounted lighting.
Rider Responsibility
By participating, I acknowledge that I am solely responsible for determining whether I have the skill, equipment, visibility, physical ability, and experience necessary to safely participate.
I am responsible for:
Inspecting and evaluating trails and features before riding them.
Riding within my own abilities and comfort level.
Maintaining a safe and controlled speed.
Wearing an appropriate helmet and other protective equipment.
Maintaining my bicycle and personal equipment in safe operating condition.
Watching for other riders, pedestrians, vehicles, trail users, wildlife, obstacles, changing trail conditions, and other hazards.
Following all applicable park rules, trail rules, signs, closures, and instructions.
Exercising appropriate caution in parking lots, roadways, staging areas, trailheads, paths, trails, and all other areas of the park.
Inherent Risks
I understand that mountain biking and nighttime recreational riding involve inherent and potentially serious risks, including falls, collisions, changing terrain, rocks, roots, trees, trail features, jumps, drops, slippery surfaces, mechanical failures, reduced visibility, other riders, pedestrians, vehicles, wildlife, weather conditions, and other known and unknown hazards.
These risks may result in property damage, serious bodily injury, permanent disability, paralysis, or death.
The presence of temporary lighting does not eliminate, reduce, or transfer these inherent risks to Wheels Up Mountain Biking, its coaches, volunteers, staff, sponsors, partners, property owners, land managers, or event organizers.
Assumption of Responsibility
I understand that I am choosing to participate voluntarily and accept personal responsibility for my decision to participate and for my actions while participating.
I understand that Wheels Up Mountain Biking does not guarantee the condition, visibility, suitability, or safety of any trail, feature, parking area, roadway, or other portion of the property.
I further understand that the presence or placement of temporary lighting should not be interpreted as a representation that a particular trail, feature, line, obstacle, or area has been inspected, approved, or determined to be safe for me to ride.
If lighting fails, conditions change, visibility becomes inadequate, or I am otherwise uncomfortable with the conditions, it is my responsibility to slow down, stop riding, walk my bicycle, use my own lighting, choose another route, or discontinue participation.
Acknowledgment
By signing below, I confirm that I have read and understand this acknowledgment. I understand the risks associated with mountain biking and nighttime riding and understand that I remain responsible for my own decisions, actions, riding, equipment, and safety throughout my participation in Friday Night Lights.
I understand that temporary lighting provided for this event is an amenity and does not constitute a guarantee or representation of safety.
