NBL1 NORTH HEAD COACH – MEN’S & WOMEN’S PROGRAMS

Sunshine Coast Basketball Association (SCBA) is seeking Expressions of Interest for the positions of:

NBL1 North Men’s Head Coach
NBL1 North Women’s Head Coach

As SCBA continues to grow and strengthen its senior performance pathway, we are seeking high-quality coaches to lead our NBL1 North programs into their next chapter.

The successful candidates will be responsible for providing strong leadership and direction to their respective NBL1 programs, developing a high-performance team culture and working collaboratively with SCBA’s basketball department and broader representative pathway.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the preparation and coaching of the NBL1 North team.
Establish and maintain a strong, professional and accountable team culture.
Recruit, develop and retain quality players.
Work collaboratively with assistant coaches, support staff and SCBA management.
Support the connection between SCBA’s junior representative, development and senior performance pathways.
Represent SCBA professionally within the basketball and wider Sunshine Coast community.
Work within SCBA policies, Basketball Queensland requirements and NBL1 competition standards.

We Are Looking For Candidates who demonstrate:

Strong basketball knowledge and coaching experience.
Proven leadership and player-management skills.
The ability to build and manage a high-performance environment.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
A commitment to player development and the broader SCBA pathway.
Appropriate coaching accreditation and compliance requirements.

Previous NBL1, state league or equivalent high-performance coaching experience will be highly regarded.

1. Culture & Leadership: How would you describe the team culture you aim to build, and what strategies do you use to maintain it throughout a season? How do you create buy-in from the playing group? How do you communicate and work with your leadership core or captains? How do you deal with conflict or challenges to team culture?

2. Vision & Development: What is your long-term vision for a program at this level, and how do you balance winning with developing athletes for the next stage of their basketball careers? How do you structure development opportunities within a high-performance environment? How do you manage minutes and roles for emerging players while still competing for wins? How do you track or measure athlete growth across a season?

3. Standards & Non-Negotiables: What are your non-negotiables as a coach (on and off the court), and how do you communicate and uphold them with players and staff? How do you hold players accountable to these standards? How do you balance discipline with maintaining relationships? Can you give an example of a situation where you had to enforce a non-negotiable?

4. Pre-Season Approach: What does an ideal pre-season look like under your leadership, and how do you prepare players physically, mentally, and culturally for the demands of the season? How do you structure training blocks and practice intensity? How do you build team cohesion before the first game? What expectations do you set for player commitment during pre-season (strength & conditioning, film, team events, etc.)?

5. Alignment & Expectations: How do you ensure your coaching philosophy and expectations align with the club’s values and the wider #PhoenixFamily culture? How do you adapt your style to the identity of the program you’re leading? How do you work collaboratively with administration, other coaches, and volunteers? What does success look like to you beyond the win-loss record?

6. Feedback, Challenges & Cohesion: How do you deal with player feedback, and what would your approach be to work through challenges throughout the season to create cohesion and unity within the team? How do you ensure players feel heard while maintaining authority within the scope of your role? What processes do you use to address internal conflict or dips in morale? How do you keep the group connected and motivated during adversity (e.g. losing streaks, injuries, off-court issues)?

7. Game Plan & Style of Play: What is your approach to building a game plan that suits your roster, and how do you adapt your style of play throughout a season? What are your offensive and defensive philosophies? How do you adjust strategies for different opponents? How do you involve your staff and players in the tactical process?

Once applications have closed, the SCBA Board will review all submissions.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to arrange an interview.

Interviews will be conducted either in person or via Microsoft Teams (depending on applicant availability).

Following the interview process, the SCBA Board will make final appointments.
