  • 2027 Kapa Haka Academy Application

Te Whare Haka o Rautāwhiri Academy aims to empower our next generation of wāhine Māori to lead with mana, humility, strength and purpose, grounded in te ao Māori and connected through kapa haka.

The Academy provides a pathway for our ākonga to develop their kapa haka performance skills, strengthen their te reo Māori, learn tikanga and mātauranga Māori, and build confidence, leadership and whanaungatanga. It will also prepare students for Regional and National kapa haka competitions and create pathways into kapa haka, teaching and cultural leadership.

Seniors – Years 10–13: Students must take Te Ao Haka as part of their normal school timetable to be eligible for the Academy. Selected students will attend a weekly full-day kapa haka wānanga, which will include rehearsals, performances, workshops, guest speakers and specialised tutoring.

Juniors – Year 9: Students are expected to take Te Ao Haka as an option during the first half of 2027. Successful applicants will then join the weekly wānanga and develop foundations in mōteatea, waiata-ā-ringa, haka, poi, creativity, stagecraft and performance.

Students selected for the Academy are expected to attend the weekly wānanga with commitment, respect and enthusiasm, maintain 90%+ school attendance, and keep up with work from their other classes. Membership will be reviewed at the end of each term.

Please complete the following application carefully. Selection will consider each student’s commitment, attitude, participation, potential and ability to meet the expectations of the Academy.
