OVERVIEW
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences seeks a Research Technician for developing a RAMAN spectroscopy data acquisition pipeline, as part of the MARIA project, for the microalgae strains in the NCMA collection. Research Technician is also needed to conduct laboratory experiments to collect key data for NCMA, CAI and MARIA related research projects.
The salary is commensurate with experience and falls within the pay band $22.89-$32.27 hourly, accompanied by a generous benefits package that includes healthcare, retirement contributions, and paid time off.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The research technician will ultimately have primary responsibility for performing biochemical analysis (ex. RAMAN spectroscopy) on the various species algae species within the NCMA collection.
- The research technician will be trained by several Senior Research Scientists in various laboratory skills including conducting lab-experiments, maintaining and cultivating microalgae species, and performing biochemical analysis on samples.
- The research technician will be responsible for general lab management and good laboratory practice, including but not limited to: data analysis, completion of specific project activities, and other lab-related workload need to be allocated temporarily due to project deadlines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Biology/Marine Biology, or a very closely related field is required.
- The position strongly prefers demonstrated experience in cell or tissue culture, especially with regard to aseptic techniques, and demonstrated experience in the culture and maintenance of microalgae.
- The position also strongly prefers demonstrated experience in RAMAN microscopy, Gas Chromatography, and other biochemical analysis of microalgae.
- The position requires excellent written and verbal skills, including an ability to conduct business professionally via the telephone, e-mail and in person.
- The position requires the ability to work both as an individual and as part of the different laboratories within Bigelow Laboratories, to seamlessly transition work activities should the need arise. The applicant must have a high degree of integrity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated experience in the culture and maintenance of microalgae, and in RAMAN microscopy. The position is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of extension for an additional year.
