• TWENTY QUESTIONS: THE COMPASS DIAGNOSTIC

  • Stress Is Expensive. Where Are You Paying for It?

  • Successful people are remarkably good at keeping things moving.

When something isn't working, capable people compensate. They work harder, think faster, take on more responsibility, solve another problem, add another meeting, reorganize the calendar, or quietly absorb what the system cannot handle.

Because compensation works, sometimes for years, it can hide the real problem.

A business can be profitable while operating inefficiently. A leader can be successful while exhausted. A team can hit its numbers while losing good people, repeating mistakes, struggling with unclear priorities, or spending far too much energy keeping everything on the road.

High performance can conceal an expensive operating system.

The Compass Diagnostic is a brief twenty-question dashboard designed to reveal where stress, friction, or misalignment may be consuming time, money, energy, talent, attention, or opportunity.

This is not a personality test or clinical diagnosis. It is a dashboard.

A warning light does not mean the vehicle has failed. It gives you information about where to look.

The Compass examines four Dashboard Lights:

COMPASS LIGHT — Are we actually going in the right direction?
FUEL LIGHT — Do we actually have the capacity to get there?
LOOP LIGHT — What keeps happening that should not have to happen twice?
CONTRACT LIGHT — What invisible agreement is actually driving the system?

At the Center is the larger question: What becomes possible when the system begins working together coherently?

Answer according to what has been consistently true during the past 30 days, rather than what you intend, hope, or believe should be true.

  • YOUR COMPASS DASHBOARD

Your answers have created four Dashboard Light scores.
  • Compass Light: {compassLight} /100

    Fuel Light: {fuelLight}/100

    Loop Light: {loopLight} /100

    Contract Light: {contractLight} /100

  • Your Dashboard Lights tell you something useful: where to look.

Your lowest score does not necessarily identify your greatest weakness. It may identify the place where your strengths are working hardest to compensate.

That distinction matters. Highly capable people can keep an inefficient system functioning for a very long time. The question isn't simply whether you're succeeding. The more revealing question may be:

What is your current version of success costing to maintain?

  • COMPASS LIGHT RESULTS

    Direction, Regulation & Vision
  • 90–100 — STRONG ALIGNMENT

Your Compass is pointing clearly. You know what matters, can distinguish meaningful priorities from immediate demands, and your time and attention generally reflect where you intend to go.

Protect this clarity. It is not merely a personal strength; it is a resource that can improve decisions, leadership, relationships, and performance.

  • 80–85 — FUNCTIONING WITH FRICTION

Your direction is generally clear, but urgency, pressure, or competing priorities may occasionally pull attention away from what matters most.

Look for the places where what you say matters and where your time, money, and attention actually go begin to diverge.

  • 70–75 — EXPENSIVE FRICTION

You're moving, but maintaining direction may be requiring more effort than it should.

Immediate demands, competing priorities, or reactive decisions may be consuming resources that could otherwise be available for strategy, growth, relationships, creativity, or the work that matters most.

  • 60–65 — SIGNIFICANT MISALIGNMENT

    Your Compass Light deserves attention.

Stress, pressure, exhaustion, competing priorities, or constant urgency may be making it harder to distinguish meaningful direction from immediate demand. You may be accomplishing a great deal without consistently moving toward what matters most.

  • 25–55 — SYSTEMIC DRAIN

    Your Compass Light is flashing.

Significant time, energy, money, or attention may be going toward movement without sufficient clarity about the destination. Before adding more effort, ask whether the resources you are already spending are taking you where you actually intend to go.

Your Compass is asking: Are we actually going in the right direction?

  • FUEL LIGHT RESULTS

    Capacity & the Vehicle
  • 90–100 — STRONG ALIGNMENT

Your current capacity appears to support where you are trying to go. Your workload, time, energy, people, systems, and resources are generally working with the destination rather than against it.

Protect this capacity. The fact that you have Fuel does not mean it is unlimited.

  • 80–85 — FUNCTIONING WITH FRICTION

Your Vehicle is generally functioning well, but some resources may be stretched or unevenly allocated.

Pay attention to where extra effort, workarounds, personal sacrifice, or a few highly capable people are quietly filling the gaps.

  • 70–75 — EXPENSIVE FRICTION

Your ambitions and available capacity may be drifting out of alignment.

Performance may still look good, but maintaining it may increasingly depend upon extra time, energy, effort, or compensation from you or the people around you.

  • 60–65 — SIGNIFICANT MISALIGNMENT

    Your Fuel Light deserves attention.

Workload, pace, time, energy, people, systems, authority, or resources may not adequately support what you are asking the Vehicle to carry.

  • 25–55 — SYSTEMIC DRAIN

    Your Fuel Light is flashing.

The system may be consuming reserves simply to maintain current performance. Someone or something may be continually compensating for insufficient capacity.

Before asking for more performance, look at what the Vehicle is already being asked to carry.

Your Fuel Light is asking: Do we actually have the capacity to get there?

  • LOOP LIGHT RESULTS

Recurring Patterns, Processing & Resource Leaks
  • 90–100 — STRONG ALIGNMENT

Problems are generally being resolved rather than repeatedly paid for. You are learning from experience, addressing difficult information, and releasing what no longer needs to consume resources.

Protect this ability to process and complete what happens rather than carrying it forward.

  • 80–85 — FUNCTIONING WITH FRICTION

Most problems are being handled effectively, but some recurring issues may still be consuming unnecessary time, money, attention, or emotional energy.

Look for the things you have become accustomed to fixing repeatedly.

  • 70–75 — EXPENSIVE FRICTION

Repeated problems, unresolved conversations, rework, delayed decisions, or familiar emergencies may be costing you more than once.

The system is functioning, but repeated correction may be substituting for actual resolution.

  • 60–65 — SIGNIFICANT MISALIGNMENT

    Your Loop Light deserves attention.

The same problems may be generating repeated work, conversations, conflict, delays, frustration, or unnecessary expense. Capable people can become so good at managing a recurring problem that the Loop itself becomes difficult to see.

  • 25–55 — SYSTEMIC DRAIN

    Your Loop Light is flashing.

Significant resources may be trapped in problems that have never been fully processed, corrected, completed, or released.

The question is not how efficiently you can handle the problem again. It is why you are still paying for it.

Your Loop Light is asking: What keeps happening that should not have to happen twice?

  • CONTRACT LIGHT RESULTS

    Integration & the Operating Contract
  • 90–100 — STRONG ALIGNMENT

What you say matters and how you actually operate are generally aligned. Your habits, expectations, environment, responsibilities, and behavior support the direction you intend to go.

Protect that coherence, especially when pressure increases.

  • 80–85 — FUNCTIONING WITH FRICTION

Your operating patterns generally support your direction, but some older habits, expectations, assumptions, or boundaries may still create friction.

Notice what tends to reappear when you are busy, tired, stressed, or under pressure.

  • 70–75 — EXPENSIVE FRICTION

There may be a meaningful gap between what you consciously intend and what your environment or habits actually reinforce.

Old expectations, assumptions, boundaries, or unwritten rules may still be influencing present behavior.

  • 60–65 — SIGNIFICANT MISALIGNMENT

    Your Contract Light deserves attention.

Expectations, habits, boundaries, assumptions, or invisible agreements may be undermining what you consciously intend to create.

  • 25–55 — SYSTEMIC DRAIN

    Your Contract Light is flashing.

Old habits, expectations, assumptions, cultural rules, or invisible agreements may be repeatedly recreating conditions you are consciously trying to change.

Knowing what should change is not always enough. The operating Contract has to change with it.

Your Contract Light is asking: What invisible agreement is actually driving the system?

  • WHERE SHOULD YOU LOOK FIRST?

  • Your lowest Dashboard Light deserves particular attention.

Your lowest score does not necessarily identify your greatest weakness. It may identify the place where your strengths are working hardest to compensate.

Capable people compensate for weak systems. Responsible people absorb unclear accountability. Strong leaders can hold together situations that should not require so much holding.

Because compensation works, the underlying expense can remain hidden.

    The question is not simply:

    “Am I succeeding?”

A more useful question may be:

“What is my current version of success costing to maintain?”

  • COMPASS LIGHT

Are we actually going in the right direction?

  • FUEL LIGHT

Do we actually have the capacity to get there?

  • LOOP LIGHT

What keeps happening that should not have to happen twice?

  • CONTRACT LIGHT

What invisible agreement is actually driving the system?

  • TWO DASHBOARD LIGHTS ARE FLASHING

Your results suggest that the most useful information may be found in the relationship between these areas.

Vision without sufficient Fuel creates frustration and exhaustion. Fuel without clear direction produces expensive movement. Unresolved Loops consume capacity that should be available for the destination. Hidden Contracts can recreate the very Loops you are consciously trying to eliminate.

When two lights appear together, the question becomes less about choosing one and more about understanding how they are interacting.

  • THE CENTER — FINDING THE FORCE

  • The purpose of the Compass is not simply to get four higher scores.

It is to identify where resources are being scattered, trapped, or unnecessarily consumed so they can become available again.

When direction becomes clearer, Fuel is protected, Loops are processed, and Contracts support rather than undermine the destination, capacity returns to the Center.

That recovered capacity may appear as better judgment, creativity, leadership presence, healthier relationships, stronger teams, more sustainable growth, greater profitability, or simply more room to think.

    That is Finding the Force.

  • NOW YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK.

  • Your Dashboard is a starting point, not a verdict.

You can begin using what you've discovered right now by noticing where these patterns appear in your work, leadership, relationships, team, or organization.

And when you're ready to go deeper, you have two ways to continue.
