We try to relate to money in line with our values of considering everyone's needs. Contributions help meet our needs for sustainability, and they also give us a way to include as many people as we can, whatever their financial means. Our sliding scales work when people who have more give more, so that people with less can still be in the room. At the same time, we ask that each person give no more than they would enjoy giving.
Finding your place on the scale
There is no income test. We trust you to look honestly at your situation. These questions may help:
- Can you meet your basic needs, like housing, food, health care, and transportation, without worry?
- Could you cover an unexpected expense of a few hundred dollars without going into debt?
- Do you have savings, own your home, or have other assets?
- Do you have access to family wealth or support, an inheritance now or in the future, or an owning-class or upper-middle-class background, even if your income right now is low?
- Do you support children, elders, or other family members?
- Does debt limit your ability to meet your basic needs?
- How have racism, disability, immigration status, or other systemic barriers shaped your access to income and wealth?
It can help to notice the difference between sacrifice and hardship. Paying a little more than feels easy may be a stretch you can make. If paying would keep you from meeting your basic needs, please ask for what you need. If the contribution is beyond your means and you believe this program will benefit you and your communities, we hope you will apply. We will do our best to include you.
