Guidance notes
Who is this grant for? This grant is for research in the field of mental health. Applications will only be considered from organisations that have a prior history or context of work in the field of mental health. The researchers named within the application must also have a sound academic record. What will be considered? The scope of the research considered within this fellowship includes: - The nature of mental health - The origin and causes of mental health disorders. - Prevention of mental health disorders - Diagnosis - Treatment and cure What preferences does the trust have? Research can be local, regional or national. Given Vic’s interest in youth and family the Trust is more likely to give preference to research relating to youth and young persons. The Trust is looking to be a significant sponsor of the research. What is less likely to be approved? The trust will not fund research that could be considered the core business of an organisation for which the organisation receives funds from another source. Where there is any doubt, it is the responsibility of the applicant to make a strong case to clarify that the proposed research is additional to core funded work and would not be able to be undertaken if additional financial support is not achieved. The trust is less likely to consider applications from research which will be funded by a number of sponsors. Applications for funding for over $40,000 in one year will not be considered. Research into new initiatives for service development could be considered. Travel will only be considered as budgeted for in the proposal and the applicant should provide a justification for that expense in the section “Budget justifications and explanations”. Conference attendance will not be considered unless it is built into the case for a larger project of research and is seen as integral to that research. The applicant should provide a justification for that expense in the section ‘Budget justifications and explanations’. What level of funding may be considered? There is no minimum level of funding and any funding given to an organisation will not exceed $40,000 in any one year. Funding is considered on an annual basis. What is the expected time frame for projects/study? Typically, the research would take up to 2 years. Larger projects should be broken down into stages in the initial application, with the initial application seeking support for the first stage. Further applications for support can be made as the project proceeds. Such applications will be required to include a budget report, actual versus budgeted for the previous funding. What is the role of referees? You are expected to provide the name and contact details of three people who will act as referees to support your application. Such referees should have sufficient knowledge of your academic work to date to enable them to verify your suitability for the scholarship. It is your responsibility to ensure that your referees are aware that you have nominated them and that they are familiar with the content of your application. At least two of these referees may be contacted by the Trust if your application is shortlisted. Please note that if referees have not responded to the Trust’s request for further information within 14 days of being contacted, your application will lapse. Sponsoring or Host Institution Please ensure you have provided the details and required signatures from the people authorised to do so. Are there any special requirements regarding the application form? It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the application form is completed in full. Any incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications must be received, by the Trust, no later than July 31st. All recipients of a Vic Davis Memorial Trust post-graduate scholarship will provide regular progress reports to the Trust (six-monthly) using the relevant report template from the website. The information requested in this application will be used for the purpose of assessing this proposal. For public interest purposes, the Vic Davis Memorial Trust reserves the right to release the applicant’s name, research project and funding awarded for successful applicants.
