• WRITEABILITY® Residency Fellows Application

    Application Requirements

    In 2027, WRITEABILITY® will select five Fellows from a pool of applicants. Please review the eligibility requirements closely. All applicants will be asked to provide the following:

    • Contact information
    • Eligibility information
    • A commitment to correspond in a timely fashion
    • Two references (one personal, one professional)
    • Demographic information
      A narrative application demonstrating their dedication to prose writing and a regular writing practice
    • A writing sample of up to 25 pages (double-spaced)

    All applicants should review the mission and commitments of the WRITEABILITY® nonprofit, and apply with the understanding that we are a mission-driven community dedicated to joyfully and sustainably living the writing life.

    Additionally, some applicants may be contacted by a representative of WRITEABILITY® for a 1:1 Zoom or phone conversation.


    Engagement

    WRITEABILITY® Fellows will:

    • Attend the annual Residency (in-person).
    • Maintain an 80% attendance at all Sustaining Circle (online) sessions.
    • Participate in one in-person and one online reading of their work at events organized by WRITEABILITY®.
    • Provide a bio, headshot, and additional information about their experience as Fellows, throughout the year-long program.
    • Maintain financial receipts and records for travel to/from the annual Residency, should they choose to request reimbursement in a timely manner.

  • If selected for the Fellowships, I will commit to attending the entire annual WRITEABILITY® Residency in person from May 3 - 9, 2027.*
  • If selected for the Fellowship, I will commit to attending at least 80 percent of WRITEABILITY®’s Sustainability Circle Zoom sessions, which are on Thursdays, 12 pm to 1:30 pm ET between May 6, 2027 and April 13, 2028 (with December and July off).*
  • If selected, I will commit to participating in one in-person and one online reading of my work at events organized by WRITEABILITY®.*
  • If selected, I will provide a bio, headshot, and additional information about my experience as a Fellow, when requested throughout the year-long program.*
  • If selected, and if I would like reimbursement, I will maintain financial receipts and records for travel to/from the annual Residency, submitting reimbursement requests in a timely manner.*
  • If selected, I will respond to communications from WRITEABILITY® in a timely fashion (in most cases, within three business days of receiving an email).*

    Please provide contact information for a personal reference and a professional reference. Your personal reference should be able to speak to your character. They should have seen you in action, in community, and also experienced your ability to complete commitments. Your professional reference should be familiar with your recent or current writing project and be able to speak about your strengths and growth as a writer. They should know your writing.

    • Please upload 1-3 writing samples totalling no more than 25 double-spaced pages in length, submitting them all in a single file. Please see the FAQs listed in the fellowship information for guidance on what you may submit. To receive full consideration, your samples should adhere to the following formatting guidelines:
      • Beneath the title of each of your 1-3 samples, please indicate the genre (short story, novel, memoir, creative nonfiction essay, flash, etc.) but not your name (to preserve anonymity). We do not accept poetry submissions for this Fellowship.
      • Do not include your name anywhere on your writing sample.
      • Together, the samples should total no more than 25 double-spaced pages. All samples should use double-spacing and 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all sides.
      • The documents can be in .doc, .docx, or PDF format and all pages should be in a single file.
