• Sport PEI - True Sport Award Nominations 2026

  • Each year, Sport PEI invites Provincial Sport Organizations, members, and the general public to submit nominations for the Sport PEI Annual Sport Awards.

    Eligibility

    • To be eligible for an athlete award, an individual must have a demonstrated connection to Prince Edward Island through residency, primary training, sport development, or representation of Prince Edward Island.
    • An athlete who relocates to Prince Edward Island primarily to train or compete must have been a resident of PEI for at least one year before becoming eligible for an award.
    • PEI athletes who temporarily train, attend school, work, or compete outside the province remain eligible where PEI continues to be their primary home or where they have an established connection to PEI and represent Prince Edward Island in their sport.
    • The Board of Directors may consider exceptional circumstances when determining whether an athlete has a sufficient connection to Prince Edward Island to be eligible for an award.

Unless otherwise specified, eligibility and accomplishments for annual awards will be based on the calendar year. Where a category specifically recognizes long-term contribution, the selection may also consider contributions made over previous years.

All athlete awards are for “amateur” sport.  Therefore, consideration will be given only to accomplishments for the portion of the year the nominee is an amateur athlete.

    Information Required

Please complete the nomination form appropriate to the category.

The quality of the nomination goes a long way in helping the selection committee understand the accomplishments of each nominee.  It also helps us to provide factual presentations for media releases and citations should the candidate be selected as a finalist or winner. The following examples are intended to help guide you in the preparation of your nomination.

    • If describing a major accomplishment by an athlete of team. Please submit more than the overall result.  Don’t just say - “Won the Atlantic Championship”.

    • Provide scores, details of competition preceding the final event, season record, league/club performance, progressing through the championship tournament or playoff.

    • Also indicate any other awards or recognition attained (i.e. MVP, top scorer, etc.).

    • Other information of value could include - retaining title, defeating previous or defending champion, win-loss record, etc.  Consideration will be given to dedication and commitment to training.

Keep in mind, the selection committee does not know the intricacies of every sport, so including as much relevant detail as possible is important.

    Criteria

Sport PEI’s Board of Directors serve as the selection committee and will use the following criteria for selection of award winners in the various categories.

Note: The Board of Sport PEI reserves the right to not present an award in a given year if it feels that the stated criteria have not been met.

    (a) All athlete awards are for “amateur” sport.  Therefore, consideration will be given only to accomplishments for the portion of the year the nominee is an amateur athlete.

    (b) The True Sport Award recognizes an individual or team who goes beyond athletic achievement to exemplify the values of sport, demonstrating sportsmanship, leadership, inclusion, respect, and a commitment to giving back to their community. The award is built around the seven True Sport Principles: Go For It, Play Fair, Respect Others, Keep It Fun, Stay Healthy, Include Everyone, and Give Back.

You will be asked to give concrete examples of how the nominee exemplifies each principle. Full information for each principle can be found at truesportpur.ca/true-sport-principles

In assessing nominations, the Board of Directors may consider:

    • Level of competition – international, national, regional, provincial or local.
    • Quality and significance of the achievement – including medals, championships, records, rankings, qualifications, or other significant results.
    • Strength of competition or field.
    • Consistency of performance throughout the year.
    • Degree of difficulty of the achievement or level of competition.
    • Progression or improvement demonstrated during the year.
    • Dedication and commitment to training and athletic development; and
    • Other relevant circumstances that provide context to the nominee’s accomplishments.
