Teaching Immigration with PreK - 5th Grade Children's Literature Oct/Nov 2026 CUNY-IIE CTLE Module Registration

The City University of New York - Initiative on Immigration and Education (CUNY-IIE) is offering free professional learning opportunities to PreK-12 educators across New York State! Upon successful completion of an immigration and education focused module, educators will earn 15 hours of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits.

The modules will include:

A 1-hour assignment prior to the start of the course (found at the end of this registration form)
7.5 mandatory hours of synchronous sessions (2.5 hours per 3 sessions)
And an additional 6.5 hours of asynchronous small group and independent work.

Registration will close on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at 11:59pm EDT.

CUNY-IIE is offering the following hybrid CTLE module during October/November 2026 for NYS educators.

Teaching Immigration with PreK - 5th Grade Children's Literature

Description: In this hybrid course, participants will delve into PreK-5th grade contemporary children’s literature highlighted in CUNY-IIE’s Immigration Literature Guide: Stories for Visibility, Understanding and Transformation. Themes of immigration, displacement, and diaspora will be explored through close reading of picture books, upper elementary grade novels, and graphic novels. Participants will also explore multimodal strategies to engage early childhood and elementary school-age children in reading these texts to become critical and engaged readers. Participants will be asked to develop a final project based on the topic of immigration and children’s literature with a focus on their current classroom context.

We have offered the Immigrants in Elementary Schools, Immigrants in Secondary Schools, Refugees and Immigrants in Schools, Key Immigration Issues, Strategies for Supporting Immigrant Students: Translanguaging and Trauma-Informed Practice modules in the past.

On occasion, CUNY-IIE's social media manager will visit the CTLE modules to document your important work by taking screenshots, photos, and/or asking the participants to comment on their experience in the modules. Your instructor will inform you about this prior to the visits, and you will have the option to opt-out.
