The Alberta Allied Roofing Association (AARA) is dedicated to advancing the knowledge, skills and professional development of roofing tradespeople, fostering excellence, quality workmanship and professionalism throughout Alberta’s roofing industry. Through the Elwood Hillman Scholarship, we aim to recognize and invest in the next generation of Alberta’s roofing professionals by supporting apprentices who demonstrate a commitment to developing their skills and advancing their careers in the roofing trade.

A monetary scholarship will be awarded to qualifying applicants, with the number of recipients and scholarship amount determined based on the number of applications received and available funding. The AARA Board of Directors reserves the right to determine the scholarship amount, number of recipients and eligibility requirements each year.

As the apprentice’s employer, your perspective provides valuable insight into their work ethic, commitment, attitude, skill development and potential within the roofing trade. Your recommendation will help AARA recognize apprentices who demonstrate dedication both on the job and through their continued education and professional development.

Eligibility

To receive the Elwood Hillman Scholarship, the applicant must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; and
- be an Alberta resident; and
- be employed by a current Alberta Allied Roofing Association Member; and
- be registered as an Alberta apprentice in the Roofing Trade; and
- have completed an apprenticeship class between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026
Scholarships will be awarded to first, second or third year Apprentices based on the criteria submitted.

The applicant must attend technical training in order to receive a scholarship cheque. Apprentices who chose to challenge the Apprenticeship and Industry Training exam will not be eligible for this scholarship. Only technical training that is part of the regular Roofing Apprenticeship Training Program will be recognized for payment of scholarship awards.

To be considered for the Elwood Hillman Scholarship, you must:
- submit an Applicant Application form; and
- submit an Employer Recommendation form; and (below)
- submit Apprenticeship Program Instructors Input form
The Scholarship Review committee will consider applicants based upon:
- responses to the questions in the Applicant Application; and
- Employers recommendation; and
- Apprenticeship Program Instructors input regarding participation in the classroom,leadership capabilities, academic standing
- financial need
