This webinar adds to our climate risk and reporting series, providing councils with insight into emerging trends and opportunities. If you've joined us for earlier webinars on climate reporting or climate risk already, this is the next practical step: turning risk management into sharper, better-governed action.
This session will showcase how council sustainability teams and risk managers are working together to integrate climate risks across council decision making and operations.
We also have a special guest from the Insurance Council of Australia, providing an overview of how insurers are viewing risk to councils and what actions can be taken to mitigate it.
The Insurance Council is the representative body of Australia’s insurance and reinsurance industry. Their reporting on all severe and catastrophic extreme weather events since 2022, shows total insured losses reached $15.4 billion, while total economic costs are estimated to be around $28 billion.
The insurance industry relies on flood studies and data provided by local governments to ensure the most accurate risk information. Investment in adaptation infrastructure that would reduce future losses is failing to keep up with the size of the escalating risk.
Climate risk management is one pillar, aligned to the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards, that councils can use to support better climate reporting, alongside the pillars of governance, strategy and metrics and targets. Better reporting leads to better decisions to manage the risk, protecting council assets, staff and communities.
The webinar itself will run for an hour, concluding at 12:00pm AEDT.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
