CULINARY ARTISTS INTEREST FORM

MATERIAL INSTITUTE IS SEEKING THREE PASSIONATE CULINARY ARTISTS TO COOK ONSITE FOR UPCOMING PROGRAMS. WE WANT TO GET TO KNOW THE NEW ORLEANS CULINARY COMMUNITY AND GAUGE YOUR INTEREST.

 

DETAILS

At Material Institute, we regularly gather and share meals to connect to people and place. We model a sustainable food system by primarily sourcing seasonal foods directly from our campus garden and local farmers to provide meals for our community.

Culinary artists are responsible for preparing fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced bulk-style meals for our programs: Material Studio, Material Camp, Material Saturday, and our monthly lunch with neighbors.

Meals will serve 45–75 people, depending on program enrollment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate with Material Institute’s Garden & Culinary Manager on program’s meals needs and deliverables
• Develop the menu, recipes, and shopping list based on program’s needs
• Prepare bulk-style meals onsite based on seasonal, locally sourced food, including proteins, for up to 75 people
• Maintain food safety standards and proper kitchen sanitation
• Either plate meals or arrange meals for self-service, depending on program, with attention to visual presentation, serving vessels, and labeling of dishes and dietary information reflecting the aesthetic standards of Material Institute
• Thoroughly clean cookware, dishes, and kitchen after food service

AVAILABILITY

• 8–12 hours per meal required for menu and recipe development, approval, shopping list development, prep, cook, serving time, and clean up
• Meals must be ready for serving at 12:30PM
• Prepare all meals on-site unless otherwise determined by Garden and Culinary Manager

MATERIAL INSTITUTE

Material Institute is where art and ecology are practiced as one. We are a cultural institution and learning community exploring the interconnection of art and the natural world by making and experimenting with sound, soil, and textiles. We understand ourselves as material, including our voices, bodies, and movement.

Within our programs, staff, teachers, students, and collaborators learn and create side by side. We invite global artists and thinkers to expand our perspectives and deepen our process. As a multicultural institution, we center emerging Black artists from New Orleans while welcoming people of all experience and background.

By modeling new ways of working and being, we contribute to transformation within our community and the wider world.

OUR PROGRAMS

Through Material Studio, Material Camp, workshops, and events, we learn and create side by side.  Within our programs, students, staff, teachers, and collaborators exchange knowledge and share professional resources and tools. 

MATERIAL STUDIO

Material Studio is a two-year, college-level curriculum for emerging fashion designers and musicians from New Orleans. Through sustained study and practice with peers and mentors, artists expand their perspectives; gain technical and creative skills; develop distinct creative voices; build professional portfolios; and foster collaborative relationships.

MATERIAL CAMP

At Material Camp, young artists spend two weeks developing and sharing their stories through materials. Artists discover and work with soil, textiles, and sound to make visual and edible art. Guided by teachers and mentors with professional experience, young artists will experiment and learn how to design shirts; shape vases, bowls, sculpture; and arrange songs that reflect their creative voice.

MATERIAL SATURDAY

Material Saturday is a monthly workshop series that invites young artists to explore and experiment with a featured material from the natural world. Young artists will also learn about and harvest herbs and flowers for a garden lunch. 

LUNCH WITH NEIGHBORS

Lunch with Neighbors is a a time for casual relationship building. Every third Thursday we prepare a meal for our neighbors, sit down, and get to know each other.
