• Rivercane Instructor Training Interest Form

    Would you like to learn how to teach classes on the harvest, processing, and weaving of rivercane to your local tribal community? We may have the role for you! This application lets us know that you show interest in being a rivercane instructor for the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana. Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be held to assess your aptitude to teach and get paid to hold regular rivercane workshops. This incredibly valuable role is the key to regrowing and sustaining knowledge on how to maintain our rivercane restoration site, how to pass on knowledge about cane processing techniques, and how to teach future weavers how to work with cane. The Rivercane Restoration Committee will have a selection board that chooses 2 - 3 applicants based on a rubric grading system. All applicants will be contacted to schedule in-person interviews with further details.

  • Selected applicants should be aware of the following:

    • You must be available to attend 2 in-person training sessions that will range from 3 - 4 days. All travel and stay expenses will be covered with allowances for food. Session training dates will always be decided based on staff availability AND applicant schedules. We will do everything to be flexible and find what works for the majority. 
      • Session 1 will be taught by Roger Cain of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Roger will teach students on how to identify healthy cane for harvest, how to maintain healthy canebrakes, and how to process the harvested cane.
      • Session 2 will be taught by a chosen master weaver. We are collaborating with several different professionals to decide on who this will be and if these classes will be held somewhere that requires travel or if it will be held locally. 
    • Once training from session 1 & 2 is completed, you will be an official Rivercane Instructor and expected to hold regular workshops for the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana. 
    • This will be a paid position. The first year will be financed from BIA's Endangered Species Grant until September 2027. Afterwards, the pay and position will be contingent on departmental budgets and council approval.
