Background
The Peace with Justice Sunday offering helps us witness to God's demand for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world. Half of all funds received by congregations is remitted to the General Board of Church and Society for support of the global grant program, the rest stays within the Upper New York area and is used to provide grants for programs, projects, trainings, and resources to aid Peace with Justice efforts locally.
Objectives
The Peace with Justice Grant Program is designed to fund:
- emerging and next step ministries
- not intended to pay salaries or stipends or make capital improvements
- not a repeat source of financial assistance
- no individual, church, or organization will receive grant money more than once per two-year period
- grants will not exceed $1,500 and may be awarded at a lower amount depending on the number of applications being considered.
Eligibility
Peace with Justice Grants
- are offered to individuals, local churches, and faith-based organizations located within the boundaries of the Upper New York Conference of The United Methodist Church
- will be awarded to projects addressing one or more of the United Methodist Social Principles as well as general criteria identified by the General Board of Church and Society.
Guidelines
Peace with Justice Grant applications must include a
- statement of support from a United Methodist pastor, lay leader, church council chair, lay person, or district superintendent who is familiar with the project (this person shall not be a member of the same household as the applicant or person receiving the funds)
- budget outline of your project
- publicity or follow-up news stories must include a statement that the project or event was "funded in part by an Upper New York Conference Peace with Justice Grant"
- written report shall be submitted to the Peace with Justice Coordinator three to six months after receiving the grant
Grant applications may be submitted to the Peace with Justice Coordinator at any time; however, they will only be considered twice a year (April & October – deadline for submission will be the 30^th of each of those months). Decisions on funding will be based on a majority vote of the Social Holiness Team and should be finalized within four to six weeks of the application deadline.
