If you are a parent/guardian, teacher or student, you may complete this form for a student CURRENTLY in grades 3 - 8 in a Charleston County School District School who would like to be identified as GIFTED AND TALENTED ARTISTIC (GTR). 

PLEASE NOTE: If your child has already been identified as Gifted and Talented Artistic in one arts area, you do not need to complete another nomination form unless you would like them to be identified in an additional arts area.

THIS FORM AND ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 13, 2026.

Notification of results will be sent via email in mid January.

Before completing this form, please familiarize yourself with the GTR Nomination Process walkthrough, which can be found by CLICKING HERE. 

Please enter the required information for the certified teacher you would like to recommend your student for CCSD's Artistically Gifted & Talented program.

Please also note the following requirements:

1. The recommendation must be from a certified classroom teacher, although they DO NOT need to be an Arts area teacher.

2. You must contact the teacher first and let them know you are requesting a recommendation before submitting this form. If they ask how to complete it, please tell them that it will be sent from the CCSD Visual & Performing Arts Department.

3. The teacher you submit information for will be sent a survey about your student, which they must complete no later than Tuesday, December 1. 


Please note that incorrect information will delay your student's nomination being processed. Incorrect information for nominations submitted after November 1 may result in your student's nomination not being processed this year.

Task 1: Dance Solo 

 Students must have the following criteria for the filming of their dance solo:

● Solo must be 1 minute in length. 

● Must show the entire body in the video frame (not just upper body or lower body) and stay within the camera frame. 

● Any style of dance is allowed. 

● Student must provide their own music for their solo. 

● Must have a SELF-created choreographed solo and it cannot copy an already choreographed dance/TikTok dance or Youtube dance. 

● Student must use school-appropriate music for solo or instrumentals. 

● Student must wear fitted clothing/dance clothes (no costumes). 

● If an Arts teacher is not filming, then the video may be filmed in a studio, outside, or a house/apartment; somewhere there is space to move. (Cannot be a competition/staged production video). Please make sure the area is well-lit.

Task 2: Creative Movement Improvisation  

 

Direct the student to interpret the music through movement (dance however they would like to the music). Students should not know which songs will be played and in what order prior to their improvisation. 

Select four songs from the following list of options (each song is linked). Play up to 30 seconds of each and improvise movement to the music. Songs can be played from YouTube uploads, which are linked below. If there is an ad, wait until it can be skipped to continue.

Task 1: Characterization 

Have the student “act out” each action described using both their body and voice.

1. You find a bee’s nest, poke it, and what happens?

2. Become any animal you choose and demonstrate the following feelings/traits: love, hunger, sleepiness, and anger. 

3. You are a very old person and you are trying to lift a heavy object.

Task 2: Imagination 

Give the student a simple object found in your classroom or home (pencil, stapler, eraser, etc). Then say, “Use your imagination to turn this object into three things that it is not. Show us how to use each of those objects.”

Task 3: Monologue 

The student selects a short monologue to present. The prepared piece should be memorized and about 30-45 seconds long. The monologue should be a piece that is already written and not something “made up” on the spot. Monologues can be obtained from a Drama teacher or any other online or published resource.

Task 1: Solo

VOCAL MUSIC

Option 1: The student will select a solo piece of their choosing appropriate for his/her voice. The solo may be sung with or without accompaniment, but if sung with accompaniment, please ensure that the student’s voice is heard clearly in the recording.

Option 2: The student will sing the first verse of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”  The solo may be sung with or without accompaniment, but if sung with accompaniment, please ensure that the student’s voice is heard clearly in the recording. Students may choose to have their music teacher provide accompaniment if desired. Please speak with your music teacher about accompaniment options.

Note for Teachers: Students may choose to sing the Quaver arrangement and use the accompaniment provided in the software. To access the Quaver arrangement, go to Class Play, type “America” in the search, then select the “Lyrics” version. In the bottom left corner of the Lyrics screen, select “Mixer” to turn off the vocals. You can also access audio files of the piano accompaniment in the GTR Shared Teacher Folder.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

(Includes Guitar, Piano, Strings, Winds, and Percussion)

The student will select a solo piece of their choosing appropriate for his/her instrument. The solo may be played with or without accompaniment, but if played with accompaniment, please ensure that the instrument is heard clearly in the recording.

Task 2: Audiation

You will hear the following script before each example: "I will play Melody Number _ while you listen. When I am finished, I will say 'your turn' and you will sing or play the same melody."

You will have 10 seconds to sing the melody using the syllable "Lu." After that, you will receive the same instructions for Melody #2.

Please make sure both the melody examples and your student’s singing can be heard on your recorded video for this Task. Please also make sure that both melody examples are combined into one recording.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:

(Includes Guitar, Piano, Strings, Winds, and Percussion)

Students may sing on the syllable “lu” OR play the line on their instrument by ear.

Task 3: Rhythm

You will hear the following script before each rhythm example: “I will now clap Rhythm Number _ while you listen. When I am finished, I will say, “Your turn,” then you clap the rhythm.” 

There will be a pause of 5 seconds between each recorded rhythm.

Please make sure both the rhythm examples and your student’s clapping can be heard on your recorded video for this Task. Please also make sure that all six rhythm examples are combined into one recording.

Visual Arts students will be screened using an adjudicated digital portfolio submission. PLEASE check that your files are working properly once they have been uploaded. Packets containing blurred visuals, insufficient artwork, etc. cannot be adjudicated. 

Digital Visual Art Portfolio

Students will submit four (4) works of art. All artworks must be original pieces that demonstrate the student’s best work. 

• Two and three-dimensional media is acceptable. 
  
  
• It is recommended that the student’s portfolio include two or more different types of media, but this is not required. 
  
  
• Art can include work completed in school and/or at home. No kits (i.e. paint-by-numbers, needlepoint, etc.) are accepted.
  
  
• Digital portfolios must be uploaded and submitted via this form by November 13, 2026.
