    Black history is Canadian history.

For generations, Black communities have helped shape Canada. Our stories reflect centuries of resilience, achievement, leadership, creativity, service, struggle, and progress. These histories are diverse, deeply rooted, and connected to communities across the country.

For more than four decades, the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia has been at the forefront of protecting, preserving, and promoting Black history, culture, and heritage.

Established through the Black Cultural Society of Nova Scotia in 1977 and opening its doors in 1983, the Black Cultural Centre has grown to become one of Canada’s most significant institutions dedicated to Black history and culture. From its home in Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia, the Centre has preserved important collections, shared the stories of generations of Black Canadians, supported education and research, celebrated cultural achievement, and welcomed visitors from across Canada and around the world.

That long legacy has created the foundation for an even greater national vision.

The Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia is advancing the realization of a Canadian Museum of Black History and Culture, rooted in Nova Scotia — a national institution dedicated to preserving, sharing, celebrating, and connecting the diverse histories and experiences of Black Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

A national museum would build upon the Centre’s decades of experience while creating new opportunities to work with Black communities, museums, archives, historians, researchers, educators, cultural organizations, and institutions across Canada.

It would provide a national home for Black Canadian history while recognizing that these stories live in communities and collections throughout the country.

By signing this petition, I am adding my voice in support of the realization of a Canadian Museum of Black History and Culture.

I believe Canada needs a national institution that will:

    • Preserve Black Canadian history, culture, stories, artifacts, and archival records for future generations.
    • Share the diverse experiences and histories of Black communities across Canada.
    • Recognize and celebrate the contributions Black Canadians have made to the development of this country.
    • Support education, research, exhibitions, digital access, cultural programming, and community storytelling.
    • Connect and collaborate with Black museums, heritage organizations, archives, researchers, and communities across Canada.
    • Ensure that the stories, achievements, struggles, and legacies of Black Canadians are remembered, accessible, and never forgotten.
    • Build upon the more than four decades of leadership and legacy of the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia to create an institution of national significance.

    • Our stories deserve a national home.
    • Our history deserves to be preserved.
    • Our legacy must be carried forward.
