Who was Mario T. Mance?
A great man once said “You can teach old dogs new tricks" and that great man was the late MARIO T. MANCE P.Eng. He was born on February 1, 1960 in Tanauan City, Batangas, Philippines. He studied and finished his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at Adamson University (Philippines) in 1982. After he got his professional license as a Civil Engineer in the Philippines, he went to Saudi Arabia to work for two years, and decided to work in Sydney Australia as an Engineer. On December 6, 1989, Mar moved to Canada and started working at Manitoba Hydro in February 1990, and worked there for 28 years. Aside from being an Engineer, He was a certified tax preparer and did his part time for 20 years.
Here in Canada, Mar met his loving, beautiful and very supportive wife, Vangie Mance. They got married on April 8, 1995 and blessed with 3 wonderful kids, Marc, Jasper and Casey. Aside from being hardworking and a good provider for his family. He spent his spare time doing what he loved to do, his passion for music and loved to play basketball. He's very much involved in the community and organized many different events in sports and music that made a good impact on the community.
He never stopped learning, he took many short courses at Red River College and University of Wisconsin, and decided to pursue his education or professional accreditation at University of Manitoba at the age of 50 and later recognized as a Professional Engineer (Civil). He's a man who never stopped learning and believed to always prepare for the future because you don't know what the future can bring. He is a philanthropist, a mentor and a man full of encouragement especially to the new immigrants.
Mar was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on January 17, 2019. He made a big impact in the community and his memories will stay in our hearts forever. The Mario T. Mance Memorial Scholarship was founded in 2019 to continue the legacy and to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
Four (4) awards are presented by the Mario Mance Scholarship Foundation through Filipino Members Chapter – Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba
Each awardee will receive $1,500, and will be disbursed as follows:
• $1,000 will be awarded in November 27, 2026. Place and format of awarding to be determined.
• $500 will be awarded after the recipient receives his or her intern designation

Criteria for Eligibility
- Must be a member of Filipino Members Chapter - Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba
- Must be a student member of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba
- Must be a Filipino descent
- Must be an enrolled full-time engineering or geoscience student at the University of Manitoba with at least CGPA of 3.0 or a direct entry student, if in first year of university
- Must submit a UofM Web transcript showing current registered courses
- Must submit latest resume
- Must demonstrate active participation in volunteering in the community
