  • Comments

  • Expectations, information and requirements

  • Program Requirements -- please read carefully:

    • CUSP is designed to expand access to timely, affordable and reliable ultrasounds for abortion-seekers living in low-resource areas.
    • CUSP aims to build a network of community sonographers, providing ultrasounds in community centers, clinics, client homes, nonprofit organizations, or through other arrangements.
    • CUSP does not provide legal advice about state laws and scope of practice. CUSP will share basic information about strategies to minimize risk. For legal advice, we recommend reaching out to Abortion Defense Network.
    • To receive training or a probe, participants commit to the following:
      • Providing affordable ultrasounds for people considering or seeking abortion by accepting low market fees and/or a “pay what you can” approach (so the fee is not a barrier).
      • Offering unbiased information about abortion options (telemedicine, in-person care, or community networks), and referring to these options.
      • Delivering timely services (goal: ultrasounds within a week of the request).
      • Participating in evaluation. To raise funds to cover costs, CUSP needs to prove the model works. We require participants to submit de-identified data about ultrasound services provided and to talk with an evaluator (anonymously is fine) about their experience with the program.
    • Ultrasound probes
      • CUSP provides long-term loans of hand-held abdominal probes and tablets.
      • Licensed clinicians may request combination abdominal and pelvic probes
      • Community sonographers maintain possession of the probes as long as they meet program requirements.
      • If for any reason the fellow does not meet program requirements, the device must be returned (shipping costs covered by the program).
    • Requirements for Fellows seeking training:
      • Patience. Proficiency with ultrasound takes time, and no one is “good at it” immediately. Fellows commit to investing the time needed to achieve proficiency.
      • Humility, during and after training. Fellows must be willing to admit uncertainty (example: when an image is not clear) and ask for help. It is better to tell a client “I don’t know – I will call a clinician for advice” than to falsely reassure (which can put the client’s health and safety at risk).
      • Responsiveness. Fellows must respond prompty to program communications, show up on time for trainings (or cancel with advance notice), and complete all program requirements.
      • Follow-up. Two to three days of in-person training leads to beginner skills -- not proficiency. Fellows agree to have all ultrasounds reviewed in real time (through Repro Health Hotline or other clinical back-up services), and send images to the Clinical Program Director, until signed off as proficient for independent services.
      • Adherence to program requirements.
        • Fellows must respond promptly to emails, show up to trainings on time (or cancel with advance notice) and complete all assignments.
        • The training program takes time:
          • 10+ hours of self study and virtual training, 1:1 or in small groups with a coach
          • 2 -3 or more days of in-person training. In-person training sites are difficult to find -- travel may be required (travel costs covered). The number of in-person training days will be variable, based on fellow skills and clinic volume.
          • Follow-up clinical review of images (real-time and after services).
  • Demographics

  • We want to learn more about the people who apply for this fellowship. Your responses are optional.
