World's Fairs have always been about selling the future as much as commemorating the past, but perhaps nowhere was this more the case than at the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs in New York. Both fairs were masterminded by Robert Moses, and it in this talk we'll look at how corporations--from GM to GE to Dupont to Disney--both flattered Moses's ideas of what the future should look like but also radically struck out on their own. From the Futurama in 1939 to "It's a Small World" in '64, the fair became a sounding board for the World of Tomorrow. How much came true? How much was just there to sell you products?
