• Taft Elementary requests to the Boise School District

  • Dear Boise School District Board of Trustees and District Leadership,

    We are parents, families and community members connected to the Taft Elementary and Hillside Junior High neighborhood.

    We have serious concerns regarding the possible loss of Taft and Hillside — or changes to the feeder pathway away from Hillside and Boise High. 

    We ask the Boise School District to consider the full picture and protect our neighborhood, community relationships and longstanding school pathway to Boise High.

     

    Our requests


    We respectfully ask the Boise School District to:

     

    1. Evaluate the combined impact of losing both Taft and Hillside rather than considering each school in isolation.
    2. Preserve a coherent junior-high and high-school pathway, including our neighborhood’s strong connection to Boise High.
    3. Preserve Taft Elementary as a neighborhood and Community School if reasonably possible (protecting its racial, cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic diversity, strong family connections and community role) while evaluating it using the full picture: utilization, facility condition, projected neighborhood enrollment, existing facility investment and community impact.
    4. Prioritize a school size that supports Taft’s Title I population and preserve Taft's academic, language, special education and Community School supports.
    5. Account for how larger schools and longer travel distances could reduce family participation, access and student connection.

    We understand the District faces difficult realities around facilities, enrollment and finances.

    We ask only that it fully consider what could be lost and the long-term consequences before permanently reshaping our neighborhood.
