Day 1 - 3P Testing and Scrimmages
We are excited to invite your athlete to participate in the California State Team (CST) tryouts, beginning with our 3P Testing and player evaluations.
The tryout process begins with 3P Testing, a standardized assessment consisting of eight drills designed to measure key water polo skills, including speed, agility, endurance, ball control, and shooting accuracy. Each athlete will receive a performance rating based on their results, which will be used to help determine team selection and placement.
Weekend 1 – Sanger Area (3P Testing & Scrimmages)
During our first weekend in the Sanger area, athletes will complete all eight 3P tests. Following the testing portion, players will have approximately one hour to rest while coaches review the results and organize teams based on performance.
Athletes will then be divided into four teams: Blue, Gold, White, and Red. Each team will consist of one goalie and approximately 9–12 field players to maximize playing time and minimize time spent on the bench.
Teams will participate in round-robin scrimmages featuring 10–15-minute game rotations, allowing athletes multiple opportunities to demonstrate their skills in competitive game situations. These scrimmages will give our coaching staff an opportunity to observe teamwork, decision-making, and overall game performance.
Please note that scrimmage performance will NOT affect an athlete's 3P Testing score. All 3P scores are determined solely by the results of the eight standardized tests. The scrimmages are a separate evaluation opportunity for our coaching staff.
Weekend 2 – 3P Testing Only
Our second weekend will consist of 3P Testing only, with no scrimmages scheduled. Athletes will complete the same eight standardized tests used during Weekend 1, ensuring that all participants are evaluated using the same testing criteria.
Regardless of which weekend an athlete attends, their 3P Testing score will be calculated using the same standardized scoring system.
Additional Testing Opportunities in 2027
Additional 3P Testing dates may be added throughout 2027 to provide athletes with further opportunities to participate in the California State Team evaluation process. Any additional dates and locations will be announced as they become available.
Our goal is to provide a fair, objective, and consistent evaluation process while giving every athlete the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. We want this experience to be both competitive and supportive, helping us identify each player's strengths and areas for continued development.
We look forward to an exciting start to the California State Team selection process and can't wait to see your athletes in action!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support!
