"Connecting the language of music to the language of life through education, outreach, and performances" for nearly 10,000 local kids annually.
  • Jazz Outreach Initiative was formed in March 2017 by co-founders, Kenny Rampton (Member Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Las Vegas native) and veteran musician and business owner, Gary Cordell. Later joined by Donny Thompson as Exec. Director and a dedicated and enthusiastic board, "JOI" embarked on a mission to build a world-class jazz culture in Southern Nevada, beginning with investments in its youngest people.

For nearly 10 years, Jazz Outreach Initiative has partnered with other organizations such as The Smith Center, UNLV School of Music, College of Southern Nevada, Nevada Arts Council, Nevada Humanities, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and local businesses and individual supporters to bring exceptional education, outreach, and performance opportunities to nearly 10,000 local kids annually.

Through the all-professional Jazz Vegas Orchestra which features many of our professional mentors, JOI also brings nationally recognized concert experiences several times each year to the general public.

Board leadership is considered crucial to the sustainability of the many programs offered to every age group and demographic across the valley as well as to connecting the nonprofit to other influencial members of the community who seek ways to invest in meaningful results-driven nonprofits.

We thank you for considering board membership with Jazz Outreach Initiative.

  • The Jazz Outreach Initiative Board is an enthusiastic and engaged working board. Board members are required to participate in 4 board conference calls per year (quarterly), along with scheduled standing committees (Finance, Nominating, etc., if a committee member) which occur outside of regular board meetings (this can happen by phone or internet). Board members are expected to be timely and present at every meeting with a maximum of two absences from board meetings. Meetings are scheduled during previous meetings to ensure schedules can be accommodated. Because JOI works with young students, all board members are required to complete a background check. Board members are also encouraged to personally witness the youth education, outreach, and performance programs for which they advocate at least once yearly. Attendance at Jazz Vegas Orchestra concerts is encouraged, but not mandatory. Between work within and outside of meetings (including concerts and youth programs), hours of commitment would probably vary between 1-5 hours per month. Board members are also encouraged to participate in fundraising and development activities, which include an annual "give or get" to JOI that is personally significant and meaningful. Current board members typically raise or contribute a minimum of $5,000/year. Board member terms are initially three years. Will you be able to make this commitment to company?*
