  • Knife sharpening 101

Tool maintenance is a foundational skill which will make using edged tools safer more effective and enjoyable. We will discuss the basics of sharpening pretty much all edged tools, edge types, sharpening mediums and techniques to keep your tools well maintained. A simple sharpening kit will be provided that you can take home to maintain things on your own. The class focus will be on fixed blade and pocket knifes, with interest and time we can go into wood carving specific tools or any tool of interest to the students.

One of the most intimidating parts of learning to carve is how to keep your tools sharp—but it need not be! Consider this a Sharpening for Dummies where you learn principles to apply to knives, chisels, planes, garden tools, mower blades and everything else where the edge matters.

*Sharpening kits made from wood blocks and sandpaper will be provided.

*Material fee $20 included in the cost

This class is in partnership with Rewild Portland and is an extension of their free Spoon Club program, every third Sunday of the month.

Taught by local Portland carving legend Leslie Walters, you will be exposed to a wide variety of deep woodworking, historical and ecological knowledge.

For a deep dive into each part of the spoon making process, Skillcraft Institute in partnership with Rewild Portland is offering a 10-month intensive beginning around April 2027, also taught by Leslie.
