The modern system of American science was founded in the aftermath of World War II on a simple premise: that through a collective, public investment in scientific research, Americans could build collective prosperity. For decades, this research enterprise delivered wins for working people: revolutionizing medicine, computing, agriculture, and transportation, creating hundreds of millions of jobs, and saving tens of millions of lives. But the central bargain is breaking down, as the benefits of public research funded by the many are increasingly snapped up by private corporations to enrich the few.
This training is about the role of public research and development in our economy; the path from basic science to commercialization and product development; the relationship between science policy (how the public directs scientific research) and industrial policy (how the public directs production); and opportunity over the next several years for UAW members in research and higher education to democratize our economic system by transforming American science.
Use this form to RSVP for the training in NYC at the UAW office (249 W 29th St., 7th Floor) at 6:30pm EST.
