Roles you need (sample selections, change them to fit your department)
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
EMT
Advanced EMT
Paramedic
Physician (EMS medical director or medical advisor)
Nurse or other healthcare professional
Ambulance driver
Medical calls only (no firefighting)
CPR and first aid instructor for the community
Other
Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals can help too: as a medical director or advisor, teaching CPR and continuing education, or monitoring firefighters' health at long incidents. To treat patients on calls, they usually also need a state EMS license.
Do EMS volunteers also need firefighting certification?
No, EMS only
Yes
Optional: they can do both
Certification required, or will you train?
No certification is needed to start. We help volunteers train as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or EMT, licensed by the state (the Oregon Health Authority in Oregon). An EMR course is usually about 50 to 60 hours; an EMT course usually takes one or two college terms. Already licensed? Tell us, and you can start sooner.

Training and time commitment
EMS volunteers keep their skills current with regular training and continuing education. Plan on a few hours a week for training, plus calls when you are available.
