The Essex County Sheriff’s Deputy Division is a volunteer law enforcement program dedicated to supporting public safety throughout Essex County.
Volunteer deputy candidates undergo a comprehensive screening process, including psychological testing, a physical examination, and a criminal background check. Qualified candidates attend the Essex County College Police Academy at their own expense and complete the same rigorous law enforcement and public safety training as regular police recruits.
After graduating and taking the Oath of Office, volunteer deputies have full police powers and commit to at least 20 hours of service each month. Collectively, deputies contribute more than 20,000 hours of service annually, assisting Sheriff’s officers and municipal police departments with patrols, emergency response, traffic and crowd control, major public events, homeland security efforts, and other public safety operations.
Deputies also support patrols throughout the county park system and respond to emergencies such as floods, power outages, HAZMAT incidents, and other natural or man-made disasters.
The Deputy Division provides these services at no cost to local taxpayers. Volunteers personally cover the cost of their training, uniforms, and equipment while contributing their time and skills to help keep Essex County safe.
