• half-lit zine issue no. 03 | Catchlight Dreams

The theme for this Call of Submission is: Catchlight Dreams. We are looking for submissions that dive into the surreal, and capture the specific feeling of "being in a dream." This theme is left intentionally open to interpretation. Overall, we hope that this gives you inspiration to explore what dreams mean to you, and the creative liberty to experiment with methods perhaps you wouldn't have had the chance to use otherwise. The following are examples of directions that can be taken with this theme, though please don't feel limited to these. Subject matter might include: liminal spaces, isolated objects, small objects made to look large, self portraits, etc. Don't be afraid to get theatrical with it! You can use props, have your friends dress up in costumes, create real scenes that tell a story. Think about your own visual style and how your subconscious, or your dream world, contributes to your creative ability. What currently lives inside of you that you want to get out? What themes are sparking your inspiration right now? Use that. Possible visual directions that may elicit a "dreamlike" feeling can include creating images that have a hazy look through the use of lens filters or in-camera made effects, color shifts from abnormal film developing methods, film-souping, double exposures, light refraction (distorting the image by shooting through glass or water), etc. This should be a fun experiment where you get to dive inward. Make it personal. Feel free to use images you may have taken previously that align with the theme, or create entirely new images based on the theme.

Do not compare yourself to others, your photographs are of your own unique perspective. Whether your photographs are several years old, have never seen the light of day, have specific intention, or just made with a disposable camera; they mean something, and deserve to be shared. Not all submissions will make it into this issue, do not let this discourage you from future submissions.
