  • BULLDOG RESCUE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION FORM

  • You have answered Yes to Having Children

If you have very small children it may be wise to wait until they are a little older as you may be in a situation where you have a dog with an unknown temperament and we need to be sure that no one's children are at risk.

Please only continue if you do not plan to foster or if you can keep a rescue dog away from your children

  • You have answered Yes to Having Other dogs

Please only continue if you do not plan to foster or if you have the facilities to keep a rescue dog away from your own dogs

  • You have answered No to being able to drive. It is preferred that volunteers are mobile as much of what they are required to do will be several miles from where they live.

Please only continue if a member of your immediate family is able to offer you transport when required

  • Please click NEXT to continue with your application

  • All rescue activity is strictly confidential, this includes details of pedigrees, owners and breeders. Everyone that requests the help of Bulldog Rescue must be assured that what we are told or what we see will never go any further.

  • Thank you for your interest in becoming a Volunteer, unfortunately this is a requirement so if you don't feel you are able to cope with this aspect of working for Bulldog Rescue we are afraid that we cannot accept you as a volunteer at this time.

We are so sorry and hope you will be able to help us in another way at some point in the near future

  • There will be times when the dog you are collecting has obviously not been properly cared for. It is important that you do not openly pass judgement on the owner, the priority is to collect the dog, tell the owner they have done the right thing and get the dog back so we can start any necessary treatment. There is always the risk that should we make the owner feel guilty they will simply refuse to let us take the dog.

  • This is a painful but necessary part of the job and something that you will be asked to do at some point. All volunteers must be aware of our Put to Sleep Policy and there there could be several reasons why you are asked to undertake it:

    a)    The dog has bitten a member of his family who don't feel they can put him to sleep themselves. To prevent the dog being sold on and possibly being passed from pillar to post and to prevent him from biting anyone else, Bulldog Rescue sometimes offer to collect the dog with the sole intention of euthanizing him for his and the public's safety as well as protecting the reputation of the breed

    b)    The dog may have come into our care with a questionable temperament and it is our job to decide if he is safe to rehome, if he prove to be aggressive towards people whilst in our care we will not rehome him and it will be your job to undertake euthanasia

    c)    The dog may have a long term illness or be so severely neglected that the decision is made based on the dog's quality of life

In every case the volunteer must stay with the dog during the process.

  • Rescue volunteers need to be aware that:

Not all dogs are suitable for re-homing, aggressive dogs will not be re-homed, dogs that are known biters will not be re-homed. Sometimes dogs are PTS but the original owners are told they have been rehomed to protect their feeling. Euthanasia is part of  the job and you are expected to accept that

Home checks  must be made honestly, do not pass a family because you don’t like to say no. Always go with a gut feeling

Feel free to stay in touch with dogs you have been involved with, cold call occasionally if possible, but be aware that you may be required to take a dog back from any home that is not correctly caring for a dog placed with them, you must be able to cope with this situation

You must only act under instruction/approval of the co-ordinator

All rescue activity is confidential, individual cases must not be discussed with third parties, and all pedigree / owner information is strictly confidential

You will be required to make every effort to attend our annual Volunteer meeting each June in Leicester

You will be required to join an on line emailing list and be given the passwords for the volunteer area of the web site

It is also a requirement that all volunteers:

    • Have an up to date tetanus jab as there will be times when you are called upon to deal with a dog with an unknown temperament and the chances of being bitten, although minimal, is there

    • Have home insurance that covers damage caused by a dog

    • Are able to travel dogs collected in a safe and restrained way
