Thank you for your interest in teaching for Los Angeles City College Community Services.  Our program aims to deliver high-quality instruction, activities and information for community members from all walks of life, in and around Los Angeles City College.  Our class offerings are not-for-credit and strive to fill all kinds of demand for educational, training, recreational, or informational subjects in a format that is affordable and enjoyable for students.

In addition to assisting Community Services in determining our ability to offer the class/workshop, the information we ask you to provide in this form serves several purposes, including: providing students information about what will be taught and who will be teaching it; advertising or marketing information for the offering; and curriculum information for LACC’s overall accreditation process.  As such, it is essential that you consider carefully the following information prior to submitting your course proposal:

1.  Does LACC Community Services already offer much the same of what you are proposing? Please read through our current catalog prior to submission.  If there is already a class offering covering what you would like to teach, it may be possible for you to be hired as a substitute teacher.  Contact Community Services by phone or email if you are interested.

2.  Is there a need within the community for the subject-matter you wish to teach?  This should address at least one of the following general areas of community or personal development as delineated by the California Education Code and the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees:

a. Civic

b. Vocational

c. Literacy

d. Health

e. Homemaking

f. Technical

g. General Education

3.  Can the demand for the subject matter you wish to teach support the costs of operating the offering? Community Services is required to be self-sufficient and every class offering must charge students fees that support both the direct (teacher’s pay) and indirect costs of operation (overhead).  Offerings that do not have sufficient enrollments to be self-supporting must be cancelled prior to the beginning of instruction and therefore the following have direct impact on this calculation:

a. Hours of instruction needed

b. Seasonality, Day(s) and Time of instruction relative to prospective students’ likely availability or interest

c. Maximum versus Likely enrollment

d. Material and physical or equipment needs of the class and their cost/availability

e. Level and nature of advertising necessary to develop community interest

f. Instructor rate-of-pay

4.  What would be the format of your offering? Community Services "offerings" can take the form of classes, workshops, clinics or even excursions and can be conducted in as little as one brief meeting or extend as far as over the course of several months. Some offerings require students to have no materials or knowledge prior, and some require pre-purchased materials or materials fees or a specific skill or knowledge set. In all cases, please refer to the basic calculation requirements from item #3 above.

As you continue, please try to complete all "optional" fields where possible and note that we will contact you as soon as possible, though we consider new proposals on a quarterly basis.
