SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

Since 1976, CCNMA has awarded more than $800,000 in scholarships to more than 800 Latino students pursuing careers in journalism.

Key Details

Who Can Apply: Latino high school seniors, undergraduate or graduate students who reside in California and show a clear commitment to journalism. 

Students can attend universities in California or out-of-state educational institutions. 

Award Amount: Generally ranges from $500 to $2,000 per recipient.
Requirements: Full-time enrollment, good academic standing, and demonstrated financial need.

Open enrollment is Sept. 21, 2026 

To qualify for a scholarship, please submit the following materials:

• Resume
• Current school transcripts
• Journalism Work Samples of broadcast, photography, radio, print, or podcasts relevant to your area of emphasis.
• A 500-word essay on one of the following topics:
  Personal statement about your background.
• What motivated you to become a journalist?
• What impact do you hope to have as a journalist?
• One letter of recommendation is required from an internship supervisor, or if in high school, a teacher or journalism advisor. The letter must be submitted as a PDF, NOT in a sealed envelope.
  Financial income from family or applicant

By clicking submit, I affirm that the foregoing is accurate in all respects, and acknowledge that the awarding of funds is contingent upon providing proof of enrollment as a full-time student for the entire current academic year; that the amount of the award may be reduced if I enroll in a college other than the one indicated on my application, or if I receive a CCNMA chapter scholarship; and that if I decide not to attend college for the fall semester for any reason, the award will be forfeited. If a non-California resident, proof of enrollment at an accredited California college or university is required or award will be withdrawn. I also acknowledge that if I become a finalist, an oral interview with the Scholarship Committee is required.
