My name is Kelea K. Levy. I am a graduate student at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UH), Center for Pacific Islands Studies, currently completing my requirements towards a Master’s degree. As part of my program, I am conducting research. The purpose of this research is to analyze the process of achieving self-governance through the use of what is commonly called the "Kanaiolowalu Roll," also know as the "Native Hawaiian Roll" that was created under Act 195 in 2011 by the Hawaii State Legislature. I am asking anyone who is of Native Hawaiian descent to take apart in this research.
Project Description – Activities and Time Commitment: If you decide to take part in this project, you will be asked to fill out a survey. The survey question types include multiple choice, true/false questions, and questions using scales to learn the degree to which you may agree or disagree with certain statements. However, there will be a few questions where you may add open-ended responses. The survey is accessed by checking the box below acknowledging that you have read this consent form and agree to take the survey and then by clicking “Next.” Completing the survey can take up to approximately 45 minutes. I expect around 100 people will take part in this project.
Benefits and Risks: There may or may not be any direct benefits to you in participating in this research project. Possible direct benefits to you may be that you have a sense of inclusion and of being valued for your knowledge and beliefs. More generally, you may or may not benefit from this research as a member of the greater Hawaiian community from being part of a project that is seeking knowledge to produce a greater understanding of our own people's potentially diverse thoughts surrounding the Kanaiolowalu roll, which in turn could benefit us in terms of helping our people to have more open and informed conversations regarding the Kanaiolowalu roll. I believe there is little or no risk to you in participating in this project. There is a possibility you may become uncomfortable or stressed by answering a question or questions. If that you happens, you have the option to quit the survey, and in doing so, withdraw from the project altogether.
Confidentiality and Privacy: I will not ask you for any personal information, such as your name or address. Please do not include any personal information in your survey responses.
Voluntary Participation: You can freely choose to take part or to not take part in this survey. There will be no penalty or loss of benefits for either decision. If you do agree to participate, you can stop at any time.
