Instructions: The student will select a patient, over the age of 12, who has permanent teeth, light to moderate plaque or stain, and is approved by the instructor. The instructor observes the student’s technique during one sextant or quadrant of polishing. The instructor will not make comments until the evaluation is completed.

Errors

1. Utilizes a modified pen grasp

2. Utilizes a fulcrum which maintains control; located close to the working area

3. Activates foot pedal to achieve slow constant speed

4. Applies rubber cup with firm, intermittent pressure (2 points)

5. Applies cup to gingival third of tooth and moves coronally to cover entire surface, including proximal surfaces (2 points)

6. Flexes cup to reach interproximal surfaces (2 points)

7. Uses sufficient amount of paste and selects appropriate polishing agent

8. Utilizes the following to obtain maximum visibility: 1. mouth mirror, 2. dental light, & 3. suction

9. Works in an organized sequence

10. Uses correct patient positioning (supine)

11. Uses correct operator positioning

12. Wipes cup frequently to remove saliva

13. Polishes occlusal surface with brush

14. Rinses thoroughly

15. Uses floss to remove polish from interproximal areas

16. Maintains clean working area, without spattering

17. Uses disclosing solution to check result

18. Re-polishes areas that have remaining accumulation of plaque
