BACKGROUND
Mrs. Elise Elliott left a trust of over $5 million with a San Francisco foundation to benefit Pacific University. One half of the income is to be used for undergraduate liberal arts student scholarships. The other half is to be used for "undergraduate liberal arts students attending Pacific University for cultural activities and enrichment, consisting of, but not limited to, such activities as theatre presentations, music and arts programs, books acquisitions, exhibits, guest lecturers, rental housing subsidies, and advising of undergraduate liberal arts students. It is [Mrs. Elliott's] intent that these funds be used to assist the University in providing a full range of services to its undergraduate liberal arts students. The net income received, however, shall not be used for administrative or capital expenditures, or general operating expenses of the University."
There are three types of Elliott grants available and, while there is some overlap, restrictions apply to each type of fund. Please submit your application according to the fund descriptions and be sure that your proposal answers to the criteria for that type of grant.

Students may not apply.
Funds may be used for activities that support the broad goals of the Elliott Fund, such as:
- Student-faculty travel to promote intercultural exchange
- Faculty development in the arts
- Student-faculty research in the arts or creative work in the arts
- Student-faculty cultural activities or cultural research
- Academic and cultural events that promote the goals of the Fund
Activities associated with a course (like field trips and guest speakers) are not eligible for Elliott Grant funding.
This fund has about $25,000 to allocate and is managed by the Dean of Arts & Sciences in consultation with the Dean's Council.
INTERNATIONAL/INTERCULTURAL PROPOSALS
This Request For Proposal (RFP) is directed to Arts & Sciences faculty members and students. Proposals must have a clear international and/or intercultural focus. There are two types of proposals:
- RFP-A is for students only; students should consult with a faculty advisor as they construct their proposal; the maximum award is $1,500; funds may be used to support international and domestic intercultural travel, research and internships; preference is given to those students who could not normally afford to participate in these activities; funds may not be used to study at foreign institutions as occurs in traditional study abroad or student exchange programs, or for study and travel associated with standard international or domestic travel courses that appear in the course schedule; a student may not receive funding for the same conference more than once, meaning that if a student was funded to attend a conference last year, funding for attending that conference this year will not be awarded; proposals from students must be accompanied by a letter of support from their faculty advisor.
- RFP-B must be applied for by faculty but the proposal must include students as active participants; the maximum award is $5,000; funds may be used to support a range of intercultural travel, study, research and creative activities by groups of students with faculty mentors; proposals from part-time faculty members will be considered and must be accompanied by a letter of support from the department chair.
Activities associated with a course (like field trips and guest speakers) are not eligible for Elliott Grant funding.
This fund has about $25,000 to allocate and is managed by the Dean of Arts & Sciences in consultation with the Dean's Council and others including the Director of Study Abroad, the Director of Financial Aid and the Director of International Programs.
