  • Thank you for your interest in the Parent Leadership Institute TheRemix! (PLI TheRemix!). Please read the entire application, completing each section in its entirety.

Why Participate in PLI TheRemix! ?

Effective parent advocacy and active community involvement in our public schools are more important than ever to ensure that our children receive the support they deserve to be successful.

PLI TheRemix! is a unique education advocacy training experience focused on decreasing the number of Black boys, particularly those with disabilties, in the School to Prison Pipeline (STPP)- a national trend wherein students are funneled out of the regular education setting and into alternative education and the juvenile and criminal justice systems.

    What does the program entail?

PLI The Remix! will cover advocacy and educational issues relevant to school to prison pipeline (STPP). Participants learn local, state and federal education structure; parent intervention strategies; data gathering and analysis; Positive Behavior Supports; Special Education; criminal justice links to the School to Prison Pipeline (STPP) and more. Upon graduation, participants benefit from a wealth of knowledge and resources resulting in heightened involvement and new associations in their school-community, which data show, ultimately improves achievement and graduation rates for their students.

PLI The Remix! monthly training sessions will be held in Gwinnett and DeKalb Counties. As a requirement of graduation, participants will be assigned to project teams to develop and implement a school-community project designed to reduce the number of Black males in special education classes who are at risk of being pushed out of school and into the STPP.

     Who is involved?

The Gwinnett Coalition to Dismantle The School To Prison Pipeline (Gwinnett SToPP) is a grassroots, parent-led, community-centered organization in Gwinnett County. Gwinnett SToPP is working in partnership with Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities and several state and national organizations to bring you PLI TheRemix!.
