This Friday, April 17 at 9 am, is a special meeting to begin the process of adopting the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (CZO), an incredibly important step in the overall Master Planning Process.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for us to get it right, or to change New Orleans in ways you won’t like.
Your neighborhood organizations have been working very, very hard to develop amendments to correct some terrible flaws in the draft CZO. City Councilmembers challenged us to find specific ways to fix the CZO. We have. Eight neighborhood organizations unified as the Riverfront Alliance propose four amendments. We need your help now.
So the public may see what it is considering, the city has been posting its proposed amendments on its website. Some will make the draft CZO better. For those, we are thankful.
But some city amendments will make the CZO even worse! For example, controversial language to allow towers in historic neighborhoods in a "Riverfront Overlay" may now be amended to permit even more towers! Only 2% of public comments to the city were in favor of this idea, with 98% opposing. Why is the city expanding a program for the 2% instead of listening to the vast majority of its citizens?
Please urge the City Council to support the Riverfront Alliance package of amendments:
1. Riverfront Overlay – Stop out-of-scale riverfront towers in historic neighborhoods.
2. Restaurant regulations – Don’t change rules for restaurants re: hours, alcohol or live entertainment without a public citizen Conditional Use process. Every time.
3. French Quarter protection - Re-insert the long-standing protection known as "Section 8.1."
4. "Article 5" – Eliminate this "Trojan Horse" until the concerns of Bureau of Governmental Research are addressed.
