    Gramercy Brass Band Camp

About Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York.

Gramercy Brass "Orchestra" of New York is a unique ensemble of leading professional brass and percussion instrumentalists in the New York performing arts community.  Founded in 1982 by John Henry Lambert, Gramercy Brass was twice the First Place winner of the North American Brass Band Competitions (1984 and 1985) and 1994 recipient of the Lincoln Center Community Arts Award, which led to its acclaimed Alice Tully Hall debut in May of 1995, with guest artists, the Marvin Stamm Jazz Quartet.

Gramercy Brass Orchestra of NY is based in the "Gramercy-Flatiron" neighborhood of NYC, and is the principal ensemble of the Flatiron Festival of Music, supported by major area businesses. Gramercy Brass Orchestra records on the Koch International Classics (E1) Record Label, and will soon have its third commercial CD available on the market.

Arts education has always played a major role in the Gramercy Brass Orchestra’s activities.  These student programs called "Polishing the Brass" include, the Gramercy Brass Band Camp, the annual "Horn of the Future Award" – presented to outstanding young high school brass players, and many In-School support programs with special emphasis on students from underserved communities.

Gramercy Brass Band Camp  celebrated its 10th season in 2014. Our camp is devoted to introducing performance styles and techniques, repertoire and instrumentation of the brass band traditions to young musicians. It is our belief that these timeless traditions create the most sound basis possible for strong, quality brass and percussion performance. Many of our camp students have gone on to study at leading music conservatories and have launched solid careers in music.

  • Auditions and Band Placement

  • NEW !!! – YouTube Placement Audition

We encourage students interested in a placement audition, to do so in advance via YouTube.  Simply record your audition program onto YouTube and email it to jlambert@gramercybrass.org  before July 10.

Auditions. Gramercy Brass will make an initial determination as to placement in one of our bands based on our own previous experience with the student, school band director recommendations and age groupings. If your child should wish to audition for the directors in an effort to better place the student in one of our brass bands, the YouTube placement audition offers an opportunity to do that.

Students should be prepared to play a number of scales according to musical level, as well as a short piece or excerpt of their choosing which they feel best showcases their talents. In addition, directors will provide a short sight reading piece via email for the student to play in order to correctly assess reading skill levels.

Results of the auditions will be available prior to the beginning of camp on the first day so that the students will know their placement and where to proceed.

Band Placement.  As we have done in the past, we will be trying to create three band levels - Junior, Senior and Premier. The Senior Band is for those students who have progressed beyond the Junior Band, but might need additional practice or skills to place in the Premier Band. Gramercy Brass will make an initial determination as to membership in each band based on prior knowledge of the student, recommendations or via audition (see above).

We will only be able to create the three bands if we can place enough members in each of them to make an effective ensemble. If we cannot field a workable number of members, we will make every effort to place students into appropriate chairs in a combined Junior/Senior Band, as well as chairs in the Premier Band so students will get the most out of their stay with us. Our goal is to challenge each student to succeed at a higher level as a musician and we will make every effort to achieve that goal for each and every individual who attends Gramercy Brass Band Camp.

If a YouTube audition is not workable for a student for a specific reason, please reach us so we can determine an alternative audition solution.

Please email  (jlambert@gramercybrass.org or Lammie262@aol.com ) with any questions you may have.
