  • Attention Sail Boaters:

A Note About Stanchions & Potential Damage

When considering shrink wrapping your boat, be mindful that the price to shrink wrap does not include additional cross bracing of stanchions to help prevent possible bending or shifting in high winds or heavy snow loads.  In the past we have taped 1X3 lumber at the top of the stanchions from bow to stern on both sides as a way to allow snow to shed more easily and to prevent the stanchions from damaging the shrink wrap.  This does not offer additional protection against the possibility of damage to the stanchions.  Should you wish for us to install additional cross bracing consisting of 2X4 lumber from port to starboard at each stanchion there is an additional $5.00/foot charge for LOA of your boat.  We cannot guarantee that cross bracing will reduce the potential for damage.

  • Shrink Wrap Installation Details

  • Our shrink wrap installation price includes the construction of a sturdy lumber framework.  For vessels over 30 feet in length we will use a 2X4 lumber center beam supported on 2X3 upright legs, plated with plywood and coarse thread screws, and secured to the rail and hardware sysem of the boat with heavy duty 3/4" woven polyester banding material to create a skeleton appropriate for shedding snow/water.  The price also includes all necessary padding and preparation required to prevent damage to the boat by the shrink wrap plastic and damage to the shrink wrap cover by parts of the vessel.  Our shrink wrap cover consists of 8mil, white shrink wrap film, and after heat shrinking the cover we will inspect for and tape any holes created during the heat shrinking process and will install an adequate number of vents to allow for passive airflow to reduce the potential for mold/mildew to develop under the cover during the storage period.  Zippered access doors may be purchased at an additonal cost and there are various sizes available which you may select from in the menu below.

You have the option of installing your own framework prior to shrink wrap installation, however, any modification we need to make in order to have your framework meet our approval for shrink wrap installation will incur an additional charge.  We do not guarantee a shrink wrap cover if we have not installed the framework.

Plesae note that shrink wrap removal & recycling is NOT included in this service but is available at an additional charge for customers who have had us install the shrink wrap.

  • Pre-Existing Damage

In order for us to properly install the support structure for the shrink wrap cover, we will need to attach woven banding material to components of your boat, including but not limited to bow rails, stanchions, and cleats.  These components must be in sound condition or there is a potential for the cover to fail.  Please acknowledge that we can attach our framework to these components or if you have preexisting damage to these components or other parts of the boat such as hardeware, windows, lights, horns, antennae, etc. please list below so we can take measures to avoid further damage to these components.

  • Tell us about the finish of your vessel:

If you check any box other than "White Factory Gel Coat" in the menu below, it is our policy that we only bring the cover down as far as the rub-rail/ toe rail.

If the hull sides are painted or re-gel coated, shrink wrap plastic can damage the finish of your boat by scuffing against the finish due to heavy winds over the course of the storage period.  Also, painted finishes are susceptible to blistering and peeling of the painted finish caused by moisture being trapped between the shrink wrap cover and the paint which can cause the solvents used in the paint to bubble through the surface, causing permanent damage.  Even if your hull sides are white factory gel coat, scuffing may occur despite our taking every best effort to prevent this.

In the menus below you will have the option to select if you want the cover down over the hull sides ("White Factory Gel Coat" only), or if your boat is painted, colored gel coat, or re- gelcoated, you will select one of two methods to secure the shrink wrap to the boat without covering the hull sides.  The two methods are the "Woven Banding Method" and "Tape Method" and are listed below with their Pros and Cons.  We ask that you thoroughly read and understand these methods before making a selection, otherwise you may e-mail us if you need further information before making a selection.

Our Default Method For Shrink Wrapping Is To Use The "Woven Banding Method" And Only Cover To The Rub Rail/Toe Rail

  • "Woven Banding Method" versus "Tape Method"

Woven Banding Method:  This is when we bring the shrink wrap cover down over the rub rail/toe rail by approximately 6 inches and secure it to a woven banding "perimeter band" that runs around the entire circumferance of the boat.  The shrink wrap is then heat welded to this perimeter band and several "belly bands" of the same woven banding material are attached to the perimeter band on one side of the vessel and then fed under the keel and secured to the perimeter band on the opposite side of the vessel.  These "belly bands" hold the shrink wrap cover secure to the vessel during the storage period.  To reduce the potential for damage to the finish of your vessel, once the shrink wrap cover has been installed, we use closed cell foam blocks backed with double sided adhesive tape that attaches to the shrink wrap cover behind the perimeter and belly bands at appropriate intervals to make sure that these bands and the shrink wrap cover do not touch the finished surface.

Pros:  With the heavy winds, potential for heavy snow load, and cold temperatures that we experience in New England during the winter storage period, the nylon bands hold the cover securely and tightly over the boat whereas tape will sometimes not adhere properly in the cold and may lift off in heavy wind or during severe weather events.  A heavy snow load my pull the bands taut but will not collapse the cover.  The foam blocking helps to reduce the potential for damage to your finish that could be caused by the perimeter and belly bands that secure the cover to the boat.

Cons:  There is the potential that the foam blocking shifts or falls out during severe weather events despite our having taped them in place.  There is also the potential for dust and dirt particles to be trapped between the foam block and the finished surface and cause micro scuffing to the finish.

Tape Method: The "Tape Method" only works when there is a metal or rubber rail to attach to without touching the finished hull sides.  This method involves first wiping the rub rail with acetone to remove wax & dirt, bringing the shrink wrap cover down to the rail and securing it to the rail with two layers of Preservation Tape which is a specialty tape that does not leave an adhesive residue when it is removed.  As this method is more labor intensive and requires the use of more expensive tape in a larger quantity, an additional charge of $5.00 per foot will apply.  This method also is very weather sensitive in that we need an absolutely calm day to install the cover and therefore cannot guarantee a service date as this must be left to our discretion.

Pros:  The cover is neat in appearance an there is nothing in contact with the hull sides that can cause damage to the finish.  The hull sides, in most cases, may be accessed at any time for maintenance without having to alter the cover.

Cons:  This method offers NO security in the event that the tape pulls away from the rub-rail due to cold or a severe weather event.  With the high winds that we experience, along with cold temperatures and moisture, the tape may not stick.  If a small segment of the tape begins to lift from the rub rail, the wind may compromise the cover and potentially cause damage to the boat as a result.  This method would only be suggested for smaller boats or boats that are sheltered from the wind.  We cannot offer any guarantee of durability of a cover that has been taped to the rub-rail.  We will NOT tape the plastic to the hull sides as this may cause damage to the finish.

  • If you are having us cover down over the hull sides, we always use the "Woven Banding Method" so please click the box below.

  • Zipper Access Doors:

If you have a zipper access door from a previous installation, we will install it at no charge provided that the zipper is functional and you have removed the old tape.  If you are leaving us a zipper door from a previous installation, please indicate below where you plan to leave the door so we can find it.  Keep in mind that it needs to remain DRY or else we cannot tape it in place so we suggest putting it in an unlocked compartment or in a plastic tote with a lid.  If you indicate that you have your own door but you do not leave it for us or if it is deteriorated to where it does not function, by default we will install a new 30" X 36" door and charge an additional $30.00 for the new door.

If you don't plan to work on  your boat while it is covered, we suggest NOT installing a zipper door as a way to discourage tampering or theft.
