  • IGRF Adoption Application

    Texas and Oklahoma
  • APPLICANT(S)

  • Are you (the person filling in this application) at least 18 years of age?*
  • RESIDENCE

  • Which of the following best describes your current living situation?*

  • If you are living with relatives, they must be involved in all aspects of the adoption processing. This will include being involved in learning about the breed and they must be present during the home visit.

  • Young Italian Greyhounds are not always the best match for apartment living. They are high-energy, still learning reliable potty habits, and often need quick access to the outdoors. Without a fenced yard, this can be a challenge for both dog and adopter.

Older adult and senior IGs tend to be a better fit for apartment homes. They are usually calmer, more house-reliable, and need less intensive physical conditioning. That said, even among older dogs, not every personality or history will be happy in an apartment setting, so matching may take time.

Puppy placements to apartment homes are extremely rare. Puppies need frequent potty breaks, structured play, and careful injury-prevention as their bones and muscles develop. They also benefit from a safely fenced yard for short, controlled exercise, and someone home during the day to support training, socialization, and routine. Many puppies also thrive with a small, confident canine companion.

Our goal is always to set each dog and adopter up for success, safety, and a happy match.

  • Do you have a fenced private yard or access to a fenced dog park on property?*

  • Are you willing and able to take the dog out on a leash MULTIPLE times a day to relieve itself?*

  • Type of fence:*

  • Type of fence:*

  • Most wrought iron fencing has a 4-6in space between bars. We require a mesh barrier to be installed for bar spacing greater than 2.5in to prevent IG escapes. Are you willing/able to do this?*

  • Can the gate be opened from the outside?*
  • Would you consider locking the gate?*
  • For Renters:*
  • Do you have a dog door?*
  • Do your pets have access to the yard when no one is home?*
  • Please check if your home has the following:*
  • If recommended, are you willing/able to install a mesh barrier along the railing on your deck or balcony to prevent the IG from jumping off between the bars?*

  • Is the pool completely and adequately fenced so that pets cannot get to it without supervision?*

  • Would you consider installing a pool alarm?*

  • Do you (or did you) use a heartworm preventative YEAR ROUND for your dogs?*

  • We want to be sure that all applicants are aware of the fact that most Italian Greyhounds are prone to having periodontal disease. They require very good oral hygiene practices and the typical IG requires a dental under anesthesia every 1-2 years once they reach age 3-5. The price for dentals can vary from around $500 to over $1,000 dollars depending on your location, how long it has been since a dental was performed on the IG, and how many teeth (if any) need to be removed. We encourage all applicants to inquire with their veterinarian to find out what a typical dental runs so you are prepared to budget this necessary veterinary expense. We also suggest that you ask what the charge for extractions are as they can impact the bill significantly. IGs who do not get proper dental care suffer with painful mouths, inability to chew properly, infections that can impact organ health, and eventually loss of the teeth and jaw bone.

  • Are you willing/able to be financially responsible for all routine, unexpected, and emergency care for your rescue dog? Including surgical repair in the event of a leg break?*

  • Do you agree to contact IGRF and return this IG if you ever find you cannot keep him/her? It is important to let your family members know this so they can contact us in the event that you are not able to.*

Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation is a 100% volunteer-run organization. Volunteers are not able to repeatedly follow up to obtain missing details, correct inaccurate contact information, or replace references that are unresponsive. Incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated reference information may result in processing delays or removal from the application queue, in fairness to other applicants who have submitted complete applications.

Please notify your references in advance that they may receive a call or text from an IGRF volunteer identifying themselves as contacting them on behalf of the rescue. Timely responses are necessary for your application to proceed.

If you have had pets within the past 10 years, we will also contact your current and previous veterinarians. Please ensure all veterinary contact information provided is current and accurate.

Thank you for helping us use volunteer time responsibly and process applications as efficiently and fairly as possible.

  • Incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated veterinary contact information will delay or stop application processing.

Our volunteers cannot locate clinics, correct errors, or repeatedly follow up for records.

Please verify all veterinary information and notify your clinic(s) to expect contact before submitting.

  • May we have your permission to contact your veterinarian, past or present, as a reference?*
