The 1893 Brand Studio: Traditional storytelling strategies from The Daily Tar Heel combined with modern marketing techniques. This media services agency will provide compelling stories, videos, photos and social media content to community organizations and businesses.
The Daily Tar Heel has traditionally provided two ways for students to learn on the job: through production of a daily newspaper and ad sales. In 2015, we added Southern Neighbor, which allows students to write and produce a monthly magazine for full-time residents of our region. Now, we have the 1893 Brand Studio.
Local organizations and businesses no longer rely solely on display advertising in a print product to get people’s attention. They want to tell their story, often through compelling, high-quality, multimedia pieces hosted on their own websites or through sponsored content. 1893 Brand Studio provides the storytelling expertise to reach new audiences and make them pay attention.
In the last year, Brand Studio students have provided in-depth storytelling, photography, design, video and web development to clients. In 2017-18, we are expanding our services. The positions open for hire are:

Students who join the agency will build and refine their storytelling skills across media and platforms, while also learning how to work for a client, take direction and produce excellent work on deadline. We organize campaigns for clients, build websites, design logos, coordinate events, and provide photography and video services for clients. Students will be paid per assignment after a brief training period.

How to work here?
We seek to hire an inclusive group of storytellers -- writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers and web developers. The ideal candidates will be students with strong multimedia storytelling skills and an interest in public relations and marketing. The Daily Tar Heel actively encourages applications from persons of color, veterans and persons with disabilities, and from candidates whose life experiences bring a broad perspective to our enterprises.
Minimum requirements: Must be current UNC undergraduate or graduate student. Ideal candidates will have completed significant coursework in the MEJO public relations or strategic communications tracks OR have taken newswriting (MEJO 153) in conjunction with work on The Daily Tar Heel staff OR have completed coursework in video, visual or multimedia communication.
