Do not use the amino acids if you:
- React to supplements, foods or medications with unusual or uncomfortable symptoms
- Have a serious physical illness, particularly cancer
- Have severe liver or kidney problems
- Have an ulcer (amino acids are slightly acidic)
- Have schizophrenia or other serious mental illness
- Are pregnant or nursing
- Are taking any medications for mood problems, particularly MAO inhibitors, or SSRIs
Precautions for specific amino acids:
- Overactive thyroid/Grave’s disease: do not use tyrosine, DLPA
- Phenylketonuria (PKU): do not use tyrosine, DLPA
- Melanoma: do not use tyrosine, DLPA
- Bipolar disorder: do not use tyrosine, DLPA, glutamine
- High Blood pressure: watch the use of tyrosine, DLPA
- Migraine headaches: watch the use of tyrosine, DLPA
- Low blood pressure: watch the use of GABA, taurine
- Asthma: watch the use of tryptophan, melatonin
- Severe depression: watch the use of melatonin
- Cancer: discuss the use of glutamine with your oncologist (some research says it’s beneficial, some says it’s harmful)
