Erythromycin antibiotic eye ointment is recommended by the State of Virginia to be administered to all newborns after birth. This treatment is considered effective in preventing bacterial eye infections or blindness that may occur if the mother is infected with gonorrhea or chlamydia. The ointment may temporarily cloud the baby’s vision. While frequent antibiotic use may increase individual resistance to antibiotic effectiveness, there are no known long-term detrimental effects to babies with this treatment.
As the state of Virginia does not permit midwives to possess, prescribe, or administer medications, we are unable to provide your baby directly with Prophylactic Erythromycin Eye Ointment. If you desire this treatment for your baby, you will need to seek a family physician, pediatrician, or obstetrician that is willing to prescribe the medication prior to birth or administer it in his/her office.
