2017 Farmworker Scholarship for College Students

Sea Mar recognizes and acknowledges the barriers children of farm working families face in their pursuit of a college degree. Economic strains, as well as the language and cultural barriers can often affect these students. Sometimes students need to work after-school and all summer to assist their family. Sea Mar is proud to provide annual scholarships to help make college a reality. To be eligible to apply, an applicant must be a:

• Student who works or has worked OR, whose parent/legal guardian is or has worked as a farm worker.
• A college student who shows commitment to their education, demonstrate leadership and care about the community.
• Exhibit financial need due to individual/family hardship.
• Will be enrolling as a full-time student in a higher education institute the 2018-19 academic year.
• Due to high demand, Sea Mar cannot award more than one scholarship to the same person. If you recieved this scholarship in high school or in previous years, you are NOT eliglible.

*For the purpose of awarding this scholarship, Sea Mar's definition of farmworker is someone whose principal employment is in agriculture or dairy labor. It does not include farm, ranch, feedlot, fishery, food- or meat-processing, or any owner or child of an owner of an agricultural or dairy business. 

Th proper usage of grammar and spelling is highly encouraged in this online application. You will be evaluated not only on context but spelling and other grammatical usage.

At the moment the online application does not allow for applicants to save their work and return at a later time. We encourage applicants to review the essay questions and in a separate document, type your response. Once finalized, copy and paste response into the online application.

Do not submit a photo of your transcript. All uploads must be PDF or JPG files. 

To be considered for this scholarship, you are expected to provide answers to the following four (4) questions: 

Question 1: From the perspective of a member of a farmworker family, how have your personal experiences shaped the student you are today. How has it influenced your current and future academic goals?

Question 2: What advice would you give to students from your high school about college? What about college has changed the person you were in high school?

Question 3: Why do you consider yourself a good candidate for this scholarship and what makes you unique from the rest of the students applying for this scholarship?

Question 4: Sea Mar is a community based non-profit that specializes in providing quality service to diverse communities. What do you see yourself doing three years from now to impact your community?

 

Each essay must be a minimum 300 words and max of 500 words.

As previously mentioned this application does not allow for you to save your work and return at a later time. We highly suggest you write your personal statement in a seperate document and when ready to submit, copy and paste into this application. Give yourself time to fix any formatting errors before submitting.
