  • 2016 NEA Joint Conference on Concerns of Minorities and Women

    Call for Workshop Proposals

  • Please review the following information carefully.

    The National Education Association's Joint Conference on Concerns of Minorities and Women will be held June 30-July 1, 2016 at the Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

    This year's theme is: Unite, Inspire, Lead: Harnessing the Power of Our Diversity.

    In our effort to continue to provide the best professional development experience for our conference participants and to align our workshop offerings to NEA's strategic goals and leadership competencies, your workshop must adhere to the following guidelines:

    • reflect a current racial or social justice issue(s) affecting people of color, women, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender people
    • maintain a pro-public education perspective inclusive of teachers; education support professionals such as instructional assistants, bus drivers, food service; or higher education faculty
    • engage workshop attendees in discussions, small group activity, and/or large group activity
    • facilitate the planning of collective action by workshop participants
    • align with at least one NEA Leadership Competency

    All workshops will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

    Only complete proposals received by March 18, 2016 will be considered. Proposals will be deemed completed by providing all information requested in the Call for Workshop Proposals Form and by adhering to the bulleted guidelines provided above in the preparation of your proposal. There are a limited number of workshop spaces available, and we expect significant interest. 

    Notifications will be sent to all respondents to the Call for Workshop Proposals by March 24, 2016.

  • NEA Leadership Competencies

    Please review the NEA leadership competency descriptions. You will be required to select one area which most closely aligns with your workshop learning objectives and collective action outline.  

     

    Advocacy – advances the cause of public education through social justice and how it benefits our students and members’ professional needs and rights.

    Business – builds the brand and accomplishes the goals of the association through effective financial management and understanding of fiduciary responsibilities.

    Communication – builds an integrated communications strategy that drives the goals of our professions.

    Governance & Leadership – sets the mission and establishes strategies necessary for a relevant and thriving organization; empowers, motivates, and fosters a pipeline of talent for the future.

    Leading Our Professions – advocated for quality inside our professions and promotes our unions role in advancing education transformation and student learning.

    Organizing – mobilizes to influence successful organizing outcomes, strengthen internal and external relationships, and membership capacity; recruit and identify new members and potential leaders into the association.

    All workshops will be 90 minutes in duration and will repeat three times.The first two sessions will be in the morning, and the third will be held after lunch. This year the conference will host 10-12 total workshops. The Human and Civil Rights Department may offer extended sessions for workshop proposals on a limited basis.

    Each workshop room will be set up with 1 projector, 1 screen, 1 chart paper on easel with markers, and a table for materials. Presenters must bring their own laptops and speakers for PowerPoint presentations.
